In the middle of the night and you HAVE to go......

Pee. I hate this on winter campouts. I'm all snuggled in and warm. It never fails in the middle of the night I have to go pee. What a pain in the neck to get out and pee. I lose all my heat and have to warm up all over again. I am considering keeping an empty nalgene in the hammock with me for this reason.

    Anyone else experience this?

Empty gatorade bottle with wide mouth works "mo'better" and you don't have to clean it at the end of the trip ... just empty it and trash it.

Yup. We all have, and the empty bottle is a good solution. Make sure it's well labeled! Do they make bottles with wide-mouth glow-in-the-dark lids?

I'd love to just have to get up once. I have to get up 15-20 times per night when I'm out camping!

They do make a glow-in-dark rex (craft lace) you could fashion a lanyard out of...

    for the bottle.

Getting up at night is bad enough..... but we river runners are required (by the River Rangers & proper river etiquette) to "go" directly into the river. River camps see a lot of traffic, and this helps keep them cleaner, plus the river dilutes out the urine. Try stumbling out of your hammock or tent, over rocks, through bushes, to go in the river in the dark while cold & half awake. I have had a number of "near death, class 5" potty experiences. The gatoraide bottle or a plastic coffee can for us gals works great & may prevent serious noctural injury.

sorry... just thinking about it made me have to "go" before I could finish typing the last message.

anyhow... will have to practice in daylight and when awake, as I just know that if I try to use a bottle while still in the hammock, at night, when not fully awake... it won't end well.

That is what folks are suggesting, right... using the bottle while still IN the hammock?
All jokes aside, I'm not confident in my ability to properly execute that maneuver.

They say it can be done, but it's not worth the risk.
