how hard is this supposed to be?

Splicing 7/64th amsteel, especially the bury part, got me some steel fishing leaders to help pull it through, but man is it hard to pull, maybe I missed a step, but it's a real pain... any tricks and tips???

It helps to cut about half of the strands that make up the amsteel about an inch or two from the end of the line you are about to use to splice through. It reduces the diameter of the beginning part of the line you are pulling through by half, and gives it a tapered effect that allows it to pull through easier. At least this is what I did. When I was looking up how to make my whoopies this step was stated, but not thoroughly explained or demonstrated where I looked.

Push it over instead of trying to pull it through.

The taper makes a stronger splice...no taper, and you have a stress riser. It will degrade the strength of your line, and is the point where failure will occur.

As stated above, the taper will also make the line measurably easier to pull through the bury.

An easy method is to take a piece of floral wire, strip the green fuzzy stuff from it, bend in half and use the blunt end to push into the center of the amsteel then pull the splice through. To finish, make an end splice. There are some tutorials on the fourm but here are a couple I snipped from this forum. Hopefully they will help out.

    Happy Trails...

I use a length of .029" ss leader wire, doubled over to make a loop. Push the wire through, and just spring the loop open so it captures the very tip of the taper. If it doesn't slip off occasionally, you're taking too big a bite.

no sure about the size of leader I'm using but the looped end does not hold squat, I had to tape the end to the leader...
