a person needs to remember how to play, to find something creative in their life, to get out of everyday routines periodically and change the mind and spirit. Over the last couple of yrs i've gotten back into the back country after a long absence,,,,feels good. Hammocking is similar to riding recumbent's, its comfortable and growing in numbers but having to fight a long time mind set.
Winter,,,i wish it didn't get dark so early

    I got two issues here.

    1) I got in, now close the door.

    2) Shug’s the guilty.

Does that mean we will soon see Hammocker magazine in our newstands? I wonder if continued growth and popularity might prompt campgrounds to start putting up posts in camp areas that can be used to hang hammocks to discourage using trees? Thats more proactive and positive than banning hammocks outright.

I see a day when a significant percentage of the population sleep in hammocks at home. With world overpopulation, as the world moves (in the big cities at least) to smaller and smaller condos and apartments, people will see the wisdom of hanging, if only for the space.

As for campgrounds (and I'm not fond of them, I prefer the wilderness) I've had good experiences at a couple of them. One nice owner escorted me around and showed me the most popular spots where other hangers had camped. It saved me a lot of scouting and I really appreciated it. In another new campground on the river, that manager had never heard of such a thing but she said.. "Sure why not we'll try anything"!
I knew where she was coming from. I use to help run a campground/bed & breakfast 5 or 6 years ago. The off season was challenging to keep a steady run of business. So that owner was grateful to have campers...period. And he wouldn't have cared if they hung from trees as long as they were paying, responsible customers.
Responsibility and education is key. This is a great forum that sets one of the best examples of that. Here you can learn how to do this thing and do it right. And having this many members must be proof of that.
Kudos to the "Powers That Be" that run this site and all the veteran hangers who bestow their experience and knowledge on us so we can all learn. But best of all to get out there and have an enjoyable experience!!!!

Yeah, Cannibal, I remember when she was just a toddler. We had to hang between two trees and it was uphill both ways... to each tree!

It has been almost a year since I first lurked on HF. For me, one of life's great pleasures is walking in the woods. I'm just a plain old ground-pounder at heart. I actually discovered Shug through Southeastern Backpackers podcast. I had visited HF a few times a couple of years ago, and hearing Rylan and Golden talk about discovering hammock camping and then the podcasts with Shug, I joined up. I'm not a gear head and I would never have learned what I have learned here had it not been for the dedication you guys (and gals) have for hanging. You have allowed me to enjoy my walk in the woods at a new level. (Pun intended)
Wow, 10,000. That's a big number for such a non-conformist as myself. Not to worry, just plant more trees. There is always room for more.

    Ever grateful,
    Ken T.
