Snow cave is much warmer and wouldn't even need a hammock :-)

Yep - but then you wouldn't get to use a hammock!

Second hammock, filled with a poncho liner and/or spare clothes, under the one to sleep in. Works great and cheap and leightweight ones one like a Byer are great for this.

Not really... here's what nigelp did in deep snow... I think it's perhaps similar to what JJ is suggesting.

If you look at the general flat lay of the fabric in a hammock, in other word a rectangle, it makes sense to me that it could work as an underquilt if it was tied up to the top hammock just like a quilt would be tied, with bungies coming off the corners of the under quilt/hammock. You would then have to find a way to gather the fabric to make it conform to the shape of your top hammock. This might be done by simply wrapping a cord around the bottlom hammock right inside of where the knot is and run the cords right up and around the upper hammock in the same place and draw it up with a cord lock. The way it is hanging in the picture would not work because it does not draw the under hammock up close and does not close the ends.
The upper hammock is a rectangle, a quilt is a rectangle, and a bottom hammock would be a rectangle. It's just how you hang it that could make this work. Mule

My bad...I guess those were just some really skinny leaves I've been raking under my "evergreens".
