    tarps with doors

Trying to decide on superfly vs. mamajamba with doors. I like the versatility of doors that come off, but wondering if there is a trade off in drafting with doors that are not part of tarp? The seal looks tight but if the wind is swirling and keeps changing direction do you get some drafting where the door meets the tarp in a MJ?

i'll let others comment on drafts, but i doubt you'd be able to tell a difference there. no tarp is going to be completely draft free in high wind, there's an opening for the suspension, and the tarp is going to be sitting off the ground a few inches as well.

I had a SF with the removable doors and never really noticed any drafts coming in there. But your gonna have air coming in anyways so I don't believe you'd notice if it did. I now have one of the new SF's and prefer the attached doors.
It's only an addiction if you're trying to quit

I have the Superfly with removeable doors and they seal just fine although I'd prefer the tarp to have permanent doors.

    Why is that?

Just a matter of convenience. I also have a MacCat Deluxe Tarp which is my main 3 season tarp and it has permanent doors attached by 2Q/ZQ. It's easier to have the doors attached so you don't have to mess with putting them on all the time. I have the latest door attachment version of the Superfly that uses the mitten clips and shock cord attachment method and I find it to be a hassle to leave the doors on when unpacking out of the stuff sack because everything seems to get twisted and tangled up. I end up stuffing the doors in the separate little stuff sack and then attaching them after the tarp is pitched which takes a bit more time.

I as well prefer permanent doors for similar reasons as Pizza does. I had a Super Fly that I played around with but ended up going with a BWWD and later on an OES Deluxe with 2QZQ door mod. My reason was simply I always use doors regardless of what the weather is like. Even if I pull them back onto the tarp their ready to go for quick deployment if I wake up in the middle of the night in a thunderstorm and want to easily close the doors.

On the other hand their are many members on this forum who really like the option of the removable doors to either leave at home or just pack for a just in case scenario.

Check out Shug's video on the Super Fly, it may give ya an idea visually on how the doors are attached. It really comes down to which one you prefer

But overall its really a matter of preference.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

Thanks for the input. It's an AT thru-hike I'm thinking of here. I'll probably go with a Superfly.
