    Gettin outta hammockin

After eight years of hammock camping, I am switching back to the ground.

I never really had a good nights sleep in one. I can't remember the last time I slept in a tent. But I want to try it again. I sold all of my hammocking gear and am now looking for either a tarptent or lightweight alternative. I know I aint making any friends by posting this, but maybe somebody here will understand hammocking is not for everyone.

I'd say you gave it a fair chance. Sorry to hear those eight years didn't work for you.

Well, if you tried it for EIGHT YEARS, nobody can say you didnt give it an honest chance!

Just like you said, it ain't for everyone. Get a cool TT and head out, and let us know how it goes!

Camping in a hammock or a tent or cowboy style, the main thing is that you still get out and enjoy the woods ect

Thanks for your words folks. I hammocked on my 2006 SOBO thru hike and used it quite often. I like the lightweight aspect, but I can configure my gear to accomodate ground sleeping with the same weight. Just have to get different gear and I love buying gear.

Hammocking is only a means to an end. That end is way more important than how you experience it. Just so long as you're experencing it.

I can't imagine trying something that didn't work for eight years! You have far more patience than I do. No one can say you didn't try.

Hope it works out for you.

You won't lose any friends! It's all about getting into the woods with just what you bring.

Hang around anyway, so that Ewker isn't the only one amongst us...

You kept at it quite a while without comfort. That's almost like sticking with it, even though you always have a Cold Butt!
(Stephen, what will your name be when you solve that problem?)

I am the same way, I still go to the ground on occasions. Fortunately I like both ways. Gives me more options of sleep for different topographic areas.

As someone who is just getting in to hammocks, it's hard for me to imagine going back to the ground. But that's just how great a teacher experience truly is. The important thing is you're not giving up the outdoors, just the manner in which you sleep. Again, with 8 years, you did your due diligence.

So SkinnyD, the important thing now is, how much gear can I buy from you?
