    synthetic

    to continue:

would a double uq system work better if one of the quilts was synthetic, & the other down?

i've heard "add a pad or space blanket" but the reason i got away from items in the hmmk is comfort driven. i'd like to avoid.

i have a diy summer synthetic uq i plan to place between a winter incubator and the hmmk. i'm hoping this will solve some cbs issues.

I've been trying to get comfy outside where it's going down to 18F at night.

Last night I had CBS with the MW3 and a Neoair pad and finally came in at about 2am. Neoair didn't seem to do anything.

Today I tried using my Big Agnes 30# down bag inside the MW3 but it pulls the left shoulder of the quilt down to far and I get cold spots.

I'm assuming if I try a summer quilt under the MW3 the same thing will happen.

I don't think the doubling thing is going to work very well

I need a wider (MW3 is 42"), warmer bottom quilt that fits the WBBB better and maybe attaches all the way around with the addition of some Omnitape or elastic and toggles at strategic locations.

    Any suggestions??

Try a pad in between your hammock's bottom layers...a pad with some better r-value than a NeoAir. A CCF pad like a RidgeRest or a foam pad like a Thermarest...or better, a down-insulated pad like an Exped Downmat 7 or 9 would give you a big boost in temperature tolerance. FWIW, the larger or "deluxe" size pads give better coverage for avoiding cold shoulder syndrome.

Actually this would be a great solution for multi-day cold weather trips.

Hang the syn UQ outside of the down UQ and try to limit any compression of either one.

This arrangement will make it more likely that the water vapor your body puts out during the night condenses/freezes in the syn UQ rather than the down UQ.

The syn insulation is less affect by that than the down insulation.
    Love my JRB BMB

I plan to try and double up my 3 season Yeti with my JRB Hudson River. I used a ridge rest pad in the hammock and the 3 season Yeti under the hammock last winter and it worked down to about 15F but I had a lot of condensation on the pad. I'm hoping that ditching the pad in favor of using two quilts will work better. We'll see.

I combined a JRB No Sniveler and an IX down to 15º a week ago. I was fine. I had the IX next to the hammock.

I just came after an hour out there.

I took the Big Agnes out from between the hammock and the UQ, put my Thermarest in the BA bag and then laid the whole thing in the bottom of the hammock and climbed in on top.

Actually worked very well like that, the UQ didn't pull down and the BA bag came up the sides enough to overlap nicely with the TQ.

Does a 3/8 Evazote pad insulate better than my TR Prolite pad? I may go pick one up tomorrow.

Ah, just caught your link. Great info but doesn't mention Evazote pads, any idea where they would fit in?

I guess a Exped 7 DLX would be nice in there!
