For those that let their dogs into the hammocks, do you ever worry about damage from the claws? I would be afraid of tearing up the hammock.

thats my big worry too
my old hiking companion, mocha, loved to sleep with me in the hammock. she was a 95 lb muscular boxer!!
as long as you keep the dogs nails short and well groomed you should not have a problem. cats + sharp claws!!!

i have mulled over the idea of hiking with my dog for awhile now and am glad he is a puggle and not a big dog. I would be worried about getting him out if something happened. i can carry my boy out.
My 10 pound rat terrier loves my hammock. I do quite a bit of testing different set ups in the back yard and I'll find her laid out inside my hammock if I leave it and leave the netting open. She also wants to get in it with me and then she'll insist on being "under" the covers. I do worry about her claws, so I try to make sure I've got either something like a blanket under me and her, inside the hammock. Or she stays on top of me. During the summer, I don't let her inside my hammock because I flat out cant take all the heat coming off her!! My big dog is not allowed in my hammock (bouvier). He camps out near by or under me and inside my tarp if it's raining. He's a very good guard dog and tends to stay on guard all night. My ratty tends to sleep all night and makes a much better "hammock warmer". There's not much worse than being sound asleep in the hammock, with your dog and having the dog decide there's something outside that she wants to bark at or get to. Please note that I've only camped in my backyard with my dogs and even there, my ratty ended up having to go inside the house so I could get some sleep outside!! My bouvier did just fine outside. (in my area there are fox, oppossum, squirel, all kinds of hunting birds, deer and cats). I'd like to plan a camping trip and take my bouvier, just haven't had the time.

For me its not the dog thats the problem, I have a 160lb BRT and most people turn the other way when they see him. Hes great solo but for group hikes people get scared of his size.
I just got my gf a puppy for X-mas and I am definitely going to try and take it hammocking. As it should be a good medium size dog. It's this really weird mix of a Labrador and a Papillon. I didn't even think it was possible.
