My very superstitious Great Grandmother of Irish decent always quoted a poem on the darkest night of the year.... "A Bayberry candle burned to the socket brings food to the larder and gold to the pocket".
In the Northern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice occurs on December 21, 2010 at 6:38 PM EST and 23:38 UTC (Universal Time).
This is a very special event. If my sources are correct the last time there was a total lunar eclipse like to this on the Winter Solstice it was in 1378!

Darn it, nothing but clouds here in Utah. Snowed all day today.

No luck for me. The sky is all clouds in Eugene. Too bad it wasn't due on Saturday night, or I would have headed for the mountains for a clear view.
starting to get overcast here in N.C... Hurry up eclipse before the clouds roll in!! The moon is directly overhead though so it should be interesting.
update: the moon has a bite taken out of it.
No luck here. Clouds engulfs the moon. Set up to hang tonight for this reason. Just as I was getting toasty in 21* my back started getting cold. Sure enough my uq is touching the snowy ground. How do I start a foot off the ground with uq, and end up that close? Polypro is my guess. And it started snowing and the stock hennessy didn't do the trick. Now I'm just venting, haha sorry.
Oh well, I believe I only got another 474 years to go for the next one!
Yup. One of our 20 days of rain had to be today... Sigh...
