    Why is a carbiner needed?

    In this suspension system:

and in similar ones, why do you have to attach the webbing with a carabiner?

Why cant you just past the bitter end of the webbing through the sewn loop?

    Thanks

You certainly can just pass it though, it just means that you have to unlace the webbing from the buckles, rings what not, each time you set up and take down. Using a carabiner to make the attachment is just faster to set up and tear down your hammock.

Because Dutch Clips didn't exist when Jeff wrote that page on his web site. Soon after, Dutch Clips and whoopie slings came along.

You are correct, you can just pass one end of the tree hugger through the loop on the other end. Hardware makes it easier.

    Besides, Dutch Clips are cool.

wwk10 - I pass the webbing thru the loop.

    I'm not a cool kid - I haven't tried a dutch biner yet

I used the dutch clip for a while. Once the dutch biner was invented I ditched the dutch clip (now just passing the strap and woopie through the sewn loop) and use the dutch biner to attach woopie sling to hammock by use of continuous loop attached to hammock. I do love my dutch clips but I find it just as easy if not easier to loop the strap around the tree when not using a dutch clip. It allows me to secure both straps before attaching my hammock to the suspension system allowing for full set up of hammock under tarp if weather is narsty.
