    prussiks slipping on tarp ridgeline

My tarp ridgeline is 1.75mm Lash-It. I had trouble keeping the tarp taut along the ridgeline in some wind -- the prussiks slipped.

My prussicks are mason line, 3 wraps. I've also tried a Klemheist with 3 wraps. It was marginally better. The issue seems to be with the low-friction Lash-It. I know that ideally the loop used to make the prussik should be a smaller diameter that the line it is used on, but I don't have much anything on hand smaller than the Lash-It to experiment with. Any ideas on non-slip adjustability?

I thought about coating the prussiks with a thinned silicone seam sealer to increase friction, but haven't tried it yet.

What are other folks using successfully?

    Thanks.

I'm a total noob so take this for what it's worth. I've used the Klemheist (how does one pronounce that now?) and I found that the smaller diameter is key. I cinch it to make sure it's snug and haven't had a problem. This is all just with experimentation and no real hanging experience.

Try adding a few more wraps on your prussik and you should see a marked improvement in the holding power.

Try sliding the prussik up and down part of the ridgeline . Abrading the coating some. As it wears it will hold better.
Four wraps can be used as well.
But that new line is slick stuff, give it a few break-in sessions, scuff it up some and will grab fine. I had the same issue at first, now it holds good.

As it has been said, more wraps and wearing the coating will help I think. Try 6 wraps with the Kleimheist.

Put more loops on the prussic (or what ever your using now)! I have the continous tarp ridgeline made from Zing-it (I think) and the prussics are the same line as the ridge, mine have four wraps and they hold fine! They were slick at first but held fine, an occasional slip when they were "Brand New" would happen, but now after a couple uses they haven't slipped once!

    Thanks for the input.

I made some new loops from Lash-It and 4 wraps on a Klemheist was much better. The mason twine was more slippery. I also took some alcohol and wiped down the ridgeline which seemed help too.

This Lash-It is very new, so I guess I'll have to wait it out a bit till it gets broke in. Hmmmm....need to use it more often. I guess that means I will HAVE to go camping more often

    Tinkering in the back yard

I got a chunk of zing-it as a stocking stuffer so I had to try it out over the weekend in a variety of configurations for my new tarp ridgeline.

I tried using the mason line with both a 4 wrap prusik and klemheist and both slipped quite a bit. "Roughing up" the line helped a bit but I'm kind of leery of chewing up the ridgeline too much.

Next I robbed some of the twisted nylon strands from the center of some 550 cord scraps. These are really small cord but surprisingly strong. These held better than the mason's line but I was worried about the small cord and abrasion problems.

Lastly I found some scraps of unknown line in the bottom of my gear pile. It was some poly/nylon braided guy line I bought a few years ago. It's a very tight braid but the outside was pretty coarse. I tried using it as drawstring but the cord seemed to "grab" even on silnylon. The diameter is about half that of my 2.2mm zing-it. With the same knots this held much better than the two previous lines. I believe the texture had more to do with it than anything.

So it seems the "hand" of the cord, the diameter, and the texture of the shell all effect friction knots. It's amazing what you learn here on HF.

I know this is probably not the answer you want to hear but 2mm Dynaglide for ridgeline, and 1.75m Lash-it for prussiks, and I haven't had any problems at all.

The use of a line that is larger in diameter than that used for the prussiks does indeed make a difference, and there is a reason for the fact that it works. Yes, you can increase the number of wraps required, or induce abrasion to reduce the slickness of the coating that has been applied, or you can just perform the process as it was originally designed and recieve all the benfits intended, it is all up to you.
