The Michigan "Fight the CBS" Winter Hang (planning thread)

We had such a great time at the Fall Hang, let's look at getting a Winter Hang together. I will Post a poll with this to see about some weekends.

My thought was we could do a drive in hang for those that haven't done any winter hanging (me) and that way we can bring extras for the adjustments need to "Fight the CBS (cold butt syndrome)"

I have a few places in mind that aren't that far of a drive.

    1. Rifle River Rec Area- They are officially open for the winter. They have a nice campground with a decent amount of trees. They have a heated bathroom.

    2. North Higgins Lake- Open for the winter. Decent campground with trees.

    3. Tahquamenon Falls State Park- Open for winter. Decent campground with some trees. Brewery on site. Long drive for a weekend.

    Other options are welcome.

great idea but like you said the falls is a long drive for a weekend but the others sound good. I like your idea of a car camp as I am a noobie to winter camping also.

never been to rifle river, concern about the lack of snow. i would vote for taquanmenon falls - if you stay at the upper campground at the lower falls there are plenty of trees. we did two trips there last year. the snowshoe hike to the upper falls and brewery is pretty sweet as well. also, the gas stations sells wood for $3 a bundle and the ranger girls are a hoot. not hot.
i would also vote for whispering pines in manellona, the rates are cheap if you're tent camping..we paid $20 for 6 of us for one night prior to a jordyn river hike. http://www.whisperingpinesmi.com/index2.ivnu they also have a barn with a pool table and games and heated bathrooms and showers.

in terms of driving, rifle is best but i'd like to be in some depth snow!!!!

I couldn't do a weekend and go to Tahquamenon Falls State Park, just to far for me for a weekend. But the other two sound great.

we've left work before at 4:30, got up there around 10pm and left around 10am on sunday morning,..it's a bit of a drive but the 3 times we've done that the conversations had made time fly. last trip this past feb. we got 11" of fresh snow as we drove in. woke up the next morning and almost barried in - awesome wake and the snowshoeing was excellent. on the last trip we left the park and were in detroit in 5.5hrs.

A heated toilet seat is a great draw.

I will keep watching the thread, I don't really have a preferance on location though.

Kinda my thought too. It seems to be no more than about 2.5-3 hours for just about everybody. We could plan for a little more elaborate cooking too.
As much as I love T Falls, I just don't really want to make that drive especially not knowing weather.

This will be difficult for me to commit to, but if I can make it at all it will be Washintgon's Birthday. I'd say Tahquamenon Falls State Park would be the best choice. I know its far, but I think it would be worth it. For me, that will be a three-day weekend, so we could maximize the time.

I'd also need to catch a ride, and in return I'd pay for gas...Anybody in Detroit area?
