Custom Multicam Rainfly - Version 2.0 (Updated w/ pics)

Some of you may remember my first attempt at a multicam rain fly. Well, after a few lessons in what not to do, I think I have a winner. My biggest mistake was not using an edging material but instead simply sewing a folded seam. The material is only so strong and at some point the shear forces will tear it to pieces. I made the mistake of leaving for work one day with the rain fly still tied taught after a night of heavy rain. The sun came out the next day and I forgot to loosen the guy lines before I left. Needless to say when I got home there was a 4' x 4' square torn neatly at one corner.

I based my newest version on the ENO rain fly but only longer. It has the cantilever cuts like the ENO but instead of the black edging like the ENO uses I chose a nice khaki brown to match the multicam. I had a local seamstress do all of the sewing for me and it turned out fantastic! I must say, for this being her first rain fly she did an awesome job!

It's made from the same 1.9oz 70D coated material as the first version and still weighs in at 1.5lbs. Unlike V1.0, this version has the guy lines already tied to the fly instead of using the plastic tarp clips. The clips work very well but they also add weight and time to the fly. V2.0 is ready to hang right out of the stuff sack, which is my mesh stuff sack for my goose down jacket. Thanks to Cuff's for that idea!

I'll post some pictures as soon as I can get Windows to sync my **** phone.....

Very nice. I'm hoping Multicam is available in lighter weight fabrics in the future.

It measures 13' 6" x 9' laying here in the floor. Now I have plenty of room for gear or if I need to take the double.

Thanks! She's on self-imposed guard duty. She always finds a big rock to sleep on so she can keep on eye out. What a good dog!

Good looking project! Is the 9' at the widest part at the tie-out? What's the width and the narrowest part?

And is that a solar charger on the rock in the background? I've been thinking about getting one of those.
