amsteel sizing

Hey Guys,

So I am going to order some amsteal to make some whoopies and continuous loops, UCR's and what not. But I was wondering what size I should buy. the 7/64 or 1/8. I did a search and I thought from what I read most use the 7/64 but when I went to place the order through Samson I started to second guess myself. So your help is greatly appreciated.

7/64 is slightly lighter, 1/8 is slightly stronger; either will serve our purposes- the 1/64 difference is almost indistinguishable to the human eye..

I used 7/64 myself. I made two 10 foot whoopies that work great and I just ordered another 60 feet of the stuff. 1/8th might work too, but 7/64 has been perfect for me. On top of that, it seemed to be the cheapest one, at least where I ordered it.

The 1/64 is more than sufficient for hammocks. You don't need 1/8 unless you want to tow a jeep
Of course, you could go MUCH larger but then the point of failure would be the tree snapping and falling on you, rather than the suspension breaking and dropping you to the ground

Their size designations aren't that accurate either - the 7/64" is more like 1/8 or larger. And the 1/8" is a bit bigger, it's the same thing as the 7/64" but with 4 extra strands woven in.

7/64 is rated at 1600lbs, with a 1400lb minimum - so we use the 1400lb rating. That's plenty for hammocking - especially when you splice it, which doesn't drop the rating much compared to knots.

Put it this way, there are 400 pound hangers out there hanging off of the 7/64 with no issues, I have sold them the stuff they are using for suspensions, If you are at or less than 400 you are more than fine with the 7/64. If you are well over 400 then consider the 1/8th.
