Ooops. Gear creator.

Basic hand-eye coordination and the ability to visualize in 3-D are all you need. And the ability to learn new skills. For me, way back in the early 70s I decided to sew a Frostline Kit - a pack bag to fit on a Kelty frame - so I got the kit, had my dear Mom give me a lesson on our old treadle Singer, and away I went. Made mistakes, had to rip seams, but in the end I had a pretty cool creation. Several kits later and I started making web gear and other accessories. And I started modifying gear I bought as well.

Its fun, satisfying, and impressed the Ladies. At least that is my theory.
