Down: where are the deals hiding?

alright, being bitten by the DIY bug (quite a while ago, but materials are coming finally!) I am considering making a down underquilt soon. Now I am working on my sewing so it will be a while.

I noticed speer sells 900 fp and thru-hiker sells 800 fp or $26 each 3oz bag. I know the speer is better, but are there better prices, maybe on lesser down? I am not looking for the lightest, best down, but something good, and more affordable. thanks!

if not, I will just have to work overtime.

Folks have said that the company at that link quit shipping for a while. Haven't heard anything about it for a while so it's worth asking again. Can't comment on the quality personally, but a couple of folks got some a while back and didn't complain.

A note on down quality. Fillpowers that high are measured in labs, where the down is very dry, fluffed, etc. When you're out in natural humidity, stuffing your bag, and not having hours to let it fluff, you won't really get the same results. Plan for an overstuff.

Certainly not a knock on the folks selling it - that's what the down was measured as. Just that the same ounce of down won't fill up 900 cubic inches on a humid AT night after being pulled from a tight stuffsack.

I have 12 oz od Ed's 900 fp down. Perfectly satisfied.

Hammock Engineer and I split an order of down from Feather Industries. The have low cost, high quality down, but the minimum order is 2 lbs. That may be a little much for your needs, but you could split it with someone.

I haven't ordered from these folks but they were very helpful and informative when I called them this past spring. I emailed them today for prices and got this reply:

"We have 700 fill power goose down for $80/lb, 800 for $100/lb, and 900 for 125/lb. Shipping for small quantities is $15.

Thank you for inquiring about our services,

I just ordered and received some down from Feather Industries in Canada. Their price for 800 fill is $73/lb. But if you only order the minimum you have to pay a premium price of $86.50/lb for 2 pounds. And it cost about $40 to get it shipped to Florida.

Shhh. Don't tell the Jacks, but I'm making my own Sniveller with 3" baffles. I just finished sewing in all the baffles. Next is to sew one side and the 2 ends and I'll be ready to start stuffing. I'll be ready to stuff it after tonight but I may have to wait until Christmas so I can officially receive my gift box of 2 lbs. down.

I have taken a few pictures. Basically I'm following the RRG quilt plans but of course had to make some changes up front to accomodate the head hole. Maybe I can write up an addendum to the article in case someone else wants to make one.

Yes! That would be great. I think Nate had some trouble with the headhole, if I'm remembering correctly. It would be great to have a special focus on it.

It wasn't really that difficult once I figured out a good solution. I'll try to do a quick sketch to show the idea. And I should probably move it to a new thread.
