    Re-stuff a Down bag

    Has anybody tried to do that . . . ? ? ?

I was looking at my down sleeping bag
    hanging from the foot end
and most of the tubes are a little shy of down,
and or the down has migrated to one end of the tube or the other.

The thought I had was maybe restuff it ? ? ?

    What do you think ? ? ?

i'd do a wash and fluff procedure first...
how old/well loved is the bag?
have you noticed an excessive down exodus?

    You mean like

    "Let my feathers go . . ."

    No, no exodus.

I had it washed by the drycleaners, in a front load washer.
and have just now tried a little fluffing.

The bottom seems fuller that the top ? ? ?

And some top tubes feel fuller than others.

It is an old bag that I have had for a number of years . . .
not even sure where it came from.

Funny: some one ripped of the manufactures ID label
but left the New material label that says
"Not to be removed before delivered to the consumer"

I had a Campmor 20 degree bag that I used for years and still do. It had 550 down I believe, and finally crushed under the use.

Near the center of the bag the down seemed thin so I used a seam ripper and at the needed areas opened the zipper seam and added reclaimed down from a vest I had. Sewed the seam back shut. It worked really well.

If you bag seems to have heavy down at the ends, get about 4 to 6 clean tennis balls and put the whole pile in a dryer. Run with no heat to fluff the down. Usualy about an hour of run time, stop and shake the bag at times.

If that doesn't do it proceed to adding down.

I went a slightly different route 20 yrs ago. My bag was falling apart and i bought a new skin from Mec, took the old down plus new down from Taiga and spent a day in the shower filling and hand sewing. The bag is a bomb but not light. If your going to stay with a bag and want to reduce your pack weight and can afford it maybe its time to step up to the bag of your dreams thats using 800+ fill but like others have said try reviving it first.
