    Building a IX Underquilt...

I'm about to build a IX underquilt for 40 deg. How many layers? I am going to back the outer layer with some breathable ripstop.

Might also be adding the option to add a layer or two inside to boost the temp rating while hammocking in lower temps. Thoughts or ideas?

I also had the idea of building a one-two layer IX quilt WITHOUT a breathable ripstop shell BUT using a SEPERATE breathable shell layer under the IX underquilt. Thoughts or ideas?

Thanks for the help. On the surface I was going to use a two layer IX underquilt with a breathable ripstop nylon layer on the outside, under the IX. I just want to make sure this is my best option. Coldest I go in hammock is 40 deg usually. I would like option to go lower, if possible... but ultra light and simple are highest priority since 40 deg plus is my usual temp range.

    Thanks for the help!

I think that most people are finding that 2 layers of IX are getting them down to 40 or so. I would use 3 layers just to be safe but that's just me. YMMV

Three layers will get a warm sleeper to freezing, and a cold sleeper into the 40s.

Four layers will get a warm sleeper below freezing, and a cold sleeper into the 30s.

I had 5 layers under me last January at Mt Rogers... got to 8*F according to one thermometer!

One of those layers was a MMG IX Hammock Sock. I used a Wiggy's poncho liner and IX on top as well... filled up the inner space of the sock with three yards of IX all fluffed up. There was only a little air space left at the head end. I was toasty!

Next question will be, "How much condensation did you get?" There was a bit of frost inside the sock from my breath, but nothing underneath me.

Lately, I've tried nesting two Molly Mac Gear Baby Orca 3/4 IX UQs, for a total of six layers, and found that it is very warm in the 20sF.

    I have no idea!

It's not supposed to get much below zero when we hang in MN in about a week, and I'll be using down!

My MMG IX Universal is two layers with a torso pad; so three layers under the torso but two layers everywhere else. If you build the Sclittlefield 3 layer you can get to 35-40° pretty easy I would think. You can build inserts for additional layering when the conditions call for it. So you will have a pretty solid 40° quilt with inserts to take you much lower when needed; and you only need to carry what you need when you need it.
