    Thanks for taking one for the team! The more I read of situations like this, the more convinced I am that hammocks are just fine for extreme winter camping (as long as it is equipped properly).

    I'd much rather have a sock with a smaller tarp to offset the weight, than just a big winter tarp. Tarps with doors are a pretty good balance, though...I'll probably get a tarp with doors pretty soon, and still carry the sock.

    I used a Vario hammock stand...no suitable trees in my yard either.

    Just got my kitchen pass to sleep in the backyard tonight.
    I chicken out last nite in fear my kit was not quite ready but USPS came thru today with a new UQ and burito cover. Not quite a sock but it might keep the wind down a little.

    Great test, Jeff! How close in function do you feel a full HHSS ( with HH Overcover) would be to your sock? I have always loved the wind(and blowing rain/mist/snow) block I get with with the UC. But I've never got around to resting the OC.
