    filtration systems

    I need help fellow adventures,
I am in the need of a water purification system. Was looking at the Katadyn base camp gravity. Now, it looks rather heavy for my needs but don't feel like pumping for my agua. Now I would consider a DIY if y'all could guide me to plans on how to. reason for my looking at the one I mentioned is that I have a gift card for fifty smackers to cabelas. but I am a pretty handy individual and think I could attempt to make one .
either way please give me advice or feedback on the katadyn gravity filter.

    1st need . nuff said.

But, will add more. It is a pump to use type but, also has a hanging bag system.

I have used mine to get water out of the bayou in back of the house. Mud, crud and everything else that @#$&%%^*$$ type people throw in it.

Water is clear as a bell and have had no problems to this point.

I don't have the gravity, but I really do like my Katadyn Hiker. The pumping is easy, and fills a liter bottle in a little under a minute. You can also look at the Katadyn MicroPur tablets. Perhaps some others can comment on the gravity specifically.

I use a Frontier Pro(1.97 oz) (56 g) for solo trips or Platypus CleanStream Gravity Filter (13.7 oz / 388 g) for groups. Both work very well and are very light weight.

I made the DIY gravity filter using the Nalgene bottle wide mouth, Walmart dry bag, and Katadyn filter, similar to the instructions Shug linked. Works just fine.

I did the DIY gravity thing, but used a sawyer filter. I have 2 filters, one is a Purifier and the other just a filter. The purifier needs to be primed before you hit the trail and seems to loose prime easily and then go slow. The reg. filter does not require priming and is a lot smaller. I've had pretty good luck with them both/they never quit working, but I prefer the smaller one. I always try to pre-filter through a bandanna when getting water and I have a pre-filter in the reservoir. However, this summer during a couple of extremely windy days in BWCA the lake was really stirred up and all my pre-filter efforts failed. It didn't clog but it sure got slow. So the efficiency of these units is highly dependent on the water source (sorta goes w/o saying)
Here is a link to a thread from the BWCA crowd showing their experiences with the Katadyn, and there are some pix of my diy rig in there as well. Its a long thread but there's some good info in there.
