How much can those pockets hold on a NA?

As a distance hiker, I rely on my gear. That also means I tend to be a little protective of it, as losing any by accident or theft could really put me in a bind when days or more away from anywhere. This brings up the constant, where does one put their gear question. I'm not asking that though, ok sort of, but not exactly.

    Here's my plan:
A: If there is sufficient room in the pockets, stuff as much gear as I can in them. This will create dead air (insulation), and put my gear close and behind velcro (tamper alarm). What doesn't fit in the pockets, I leave in my pack, and place it under my knees (I like knee support when sleeping like a banana) which will also offer added insulation. This should keep my gear fairly close, and would discourage any tampering.

I haven't got a clue how much those pockets hold, so I'm not sure if plan A is viable or not. If not, here is plan B.

B: I get a gear hammock, and tie it next to my NA. Perhaps the JRB gear hammock or the Bushman Hammock Chair. I stuff extra clothes that I'm now wearing into the NA pockets for insulation, leave the rest in my pack and drop it into the gear hammock (also under my oversized tarp). If I need anything, I can reach out to the gear hammock next to me and get it. I can still get out easily on the other side.

And if that doesn't work either, there is plan C.

C: Someone here tells me a much better option than A or B above, and I use that instead. Something tells me that I'll be going with Plan C.

So, how much can one put in those pockets? Any pictures of them with something to scale the size? A boot? Soda Can? Milk Jug? Anything to show how large and deep they are. And, don't forget to let me know what Plan C is. Thanks everyone.

The only way I can say it is,

I have sewn some pads and they measure,
the length and width of each pocket
    about 12" X 22"
    and the thickness is 2.75"

This pad and the Z-Liner at about an inch of thickness,
    totally fills the pocket.

There you have the dimensions of the four head end pockets
the 2 others are the same but 13" wide.

Just thought: the width of the pocket is inline with the length of the hammock

Wow, they're larger than I thought. Plan A might work alright. Very good news. Thanks.

I'd be willing to bet those 6 pockets can hold more than your pack can. Obviously not a good idea for the hard stuff like stoves and cookwear and stuff.

Even though I've only got 4 pockets, I've been able to pack gear, boots, spare clothes, odds and ends, stuff into my pockets and then put my backpack inside with me (under my feet). Normally I'll just hang my backpack off the head end of my hammock, it will be empty. All food/smellies are hung in a tree far far away. Or on the bear cables. I've found that I only pack very small items (my flashlight) in one pocket during the winter because I use an under quilt and I don't want air gaps. Summer is when I really use those pockets for gear. Not clothes though because it would be to hot.

What RiverPirate said... I would be amazed if you could carry enough in your pack to fill up those pockets.

    The pockets cube out at:

    4884 cubic inches = 80 L

but one would want to consider avoiding the poke in the back packing of it

I have been able to completely unpack my backpack into the pockets of my NA including boots.

I am wondering why you are so worried about pilferage; are you camping at festival or populated campsites? most folks on Long distance trails are pretty respectful of others stuff, and with a hammock you can always mosey on down the trail another mile for some peace and quiet; once you are off the trail more than about 20 ft hardly anybody will see you anyway...(not that I have been there or tried this, just the impression I get from other's trail journals..)
