playing with a G.I. bivvy sack for winter

now this is not a light weight set up by any stretch but it had me cooking in mid 20-30 degree last night . had to keep peeling clothing off in about 27 degree night. now i am not very tall only about 5`7 so i had plenty of room just a bit tight however, i was laying on an over sized bass pro shop bag and covering with both of the G.I. bags snapped together i had no cold spots under me... and no condensation for a change. the bivy is gore tex and worked well i made a slit inline with the zipper and put velcro on the edges so i can also use it on the ground if needed

You could also just use the bivy like a normal bivy, just inside the hammock.

I'm going to be using the GI Modular system tomorrow in about 12 degree weather. I had never considered using the bivvy on the OUTSIDE of my hammock.

I have the Wiggys version of the modular system...it's awesome for what it's designed for, which is decidedly not lightweight hiking. I have the 0F bag, the 30F overbag, and the non-breathable (!) bivy. I started out hiking with the overbag, and that's usually what I take when I deploy.

On my first sub-freezing hammock night, I had the Nest+NS doubled up as underquilts and the 0F bag inside the hammock...dern toasty!

Great system, even for hammocks...just heavier than other options.
