Knot Ideas For Joining Lengths Of Lash-It

While making up some soft shackle prussiks and a couple nacrabiners today, it occurred to me that the "Lock" used on the end might be useful for joining two pieces of Lash-It, when a longer piece is needed.

What do most people do with the ends of their short lengths of Amsteel or Lash-It? I usually carry about a dozen short lengths of line for other uses around camp.

I was thinking of two options. Either putting a loop on one end and a "lock" on the other. Or a stopper knot on one end and a "lock" on the other.

I'm thinking more along the lines of those times when you want to quickly join short pieces that will be taken apart say the next morning. Like when erecting a group tarp for the night. Usually no two tarp sites present the same challenges to pitching the tarp, so I carry lengths of line of varying lengths. In the past I've used heavier solid core lines, but I have 150' of 2mm Dyneema on the way, and of course it has me looking for options.

Indeed nice and secure, but are real P.I.T.A. to undo after being loaded.

For me I use 8' tarp tie out lines. I use 2.2mm Zing It and haven't found a situation where I needed more than that. I also use a 30' continuous ridgeline and haven't found (in the areas I hang) a need for anything longer.

My guy lines are all configured with fixed eye splices on one end and a back splice on the other end to prevent fraying. I can easily make lines longer my girth hitching one fixed eye to the other. For a more permanent solution I have spliced shorter lengths of Zing-It together (using the simple brummel described in the continuous loop pictorial thread) to make longer lines.

To the original question bcaron posed, I would say make a few up and test it out and see how you like it.

Slippery sheet bend, double sheet bend it if you're worried. I use a single slippery sheet bend all the time just for the purpose you mentioned.
If you had loops in the ends you could just "lock" them together.

I'm with Knotty on this one. The Zeppelin bend is very quick to tie and untie. Fisherman bends are handy but much more fiddley to knot/unknot.

Well, we don't use Zepplins much any more, and it never was widely adopted even then. But it is a great bend. In smaller cord I find the slipped double sheet to be both easier to tie and untie after heavy loading. The Zepplin can be tied slippery as well, but it is much more complex than the others when doing it this way. My rule for small cordage is that the knots MUST be slippery or exploding; too hard to get at that small stuff with my fingernails and bad eyes!
