Suspension idea - from a newbie.

Hello all - I'm new 'round here...I'm awaiting the delivery of my HH Expedition (took advantage of the holiday special).

I have been looking at all of the different DIY items lately. I was thinking about a different tree system to avoid using the endless lashing.

Previously being a climbing, I still have some climbing gear around....what if I made a sling for the tree, with two ascending rings on one end, and an open loop on the other. Sling the tree and then use the rings to tighten the support lines.

Would this work? Do I need to switch to Amsteel to use the rings?

I got tired of the HH lashing, and converted to straps with lightweight cinch buckles from Arrowhead Equipment. Much easier to adjust the hang. Search the forums for demos on how to do the conversion. Not a difficult operation.

One word of caution - your climbing gear probably includes tubular nylon web. Most hangers use polyester or polypropylene because of their lower stretch, especially when wet. AHE is also a source of polyester web for that conversion.

Sounds like this.

IMHO, using a garda hitch with webbing is fine but risky with high tech ropes like amsteel. In either case, use a slippery half hitch to secure it. More than one hanger has been unceremoniously lowered to the ground when they forgot the half hitch.

Problem with suggested approach is that you can end up with too much strap if the trees are small diameter.

A more common approach is to attach the rings to the hammock end as below.

The first picture is exactly what I was thinking.....but I do see the issue - I could always wrap the webbing around the tree.

I guess the in the second photo, using woopie slings would be beneficial.

The second photo doesn't use whoopies at all. The rings are attached to the whipped hammock end with a larks head and also to the rings with a larks head. Then the long strap (15' or so) w/ a sewn eye on one end loops around the tree and secures w/ a biner or dutch clip. The tag end of the strap threads through the rings and allows you to tighten or loosen the length.

Works great and is just a little heavier than whoopies.
