Qs: various materials/sizes for pipe stand

What is the spectrum of choices of materials and sizes suitable for pipe stands?

For steel black pipe, 1" was suggested, but some used 1.25" for public hammock displays. Black pipe is dirty to handle, is galvanized okay after cleaning it?

Galvanized steel would have similar strength to black pipe. Does it cost much more? Which one paints easier?

Schedule 40 is common homeowner PVC, stronger Schedule 80 is available. I wish that I could find and comprehend a spec sheet for larger diameters of Schedule 80. At an industrial pipe supplier, is Schedule 100 or 200 available? Those could both cost and weigh more than steel. Water gets pumped to the top of high rise buildings in some type of strong pipe, maybe in stages?

I want to paint a stand for steady indoor use, and have one for car camping and patio use.

Galvinized is fine, but will have to be cleaned, just like black pipe. I wouldn't trust either one on good carpet...put some scraps under. I would imagine black pipe is easier to paint, but that's just a WAG.

As for pipe size, either will work, and in fact, even smaller probably would. It's those fittings, cast with care in China, that give me pause. They are not, and never were, designed for structural loads. When we build hammock stands with these things, we are well outside the design window.

I can't see any reason to go with plastic pipe, and several reasons not to.

PVC would bend easier it is just not a pipe to use but galvanized clean would do nicely

How about some 4" pvc? All the forces could be setup to only compress the pvc the long way, I would imaging it would be pretty strong.
