What makes it asymmetrical and not just a gathered end hammock?? Is it just where the tie down thingies are attached?
God bless,
Chris

Pretty much "where the tie down thingies are attached".
It's mostly a term used for patenting designs since most any hammock becomes asymmetrical when you lay diagonally in it. Hammocks called "asymmetrical" almost always have tie-outs, but tie-outs don't necessarily mean the hammock is asymmetrical. The Blackbirds for instance, have tie-outs, but are considered "symmetrical" because of where the tie-outs are positioned.
It gets even more confusing, but luckily fancy words have zero impact on hammock goodness. Figure out what looks, seems, and feels comfortable first. After that, you can start using $3 words to describe your setup and impress your friends and family.

Technically, yes, when the tie outs are added it makes the hammock an asym.
You don't need the tie outs neccessarily. Just lay diagonally, head left or right of centerline of the hammock, feet on the opposite side of the hammock.
For the most part, the tieouts hold the netting up and out.
And they give the hammock that cool spacey look.
Ambulo tua ambulo.
parallelogram-shaped, wheras symmetrical ones are diamond-shaped.

I have been wrong before though.
Thanks for the info and the welcome! i just made my first "hammock" today. i took a 8x12 canvass drop cloth, folded it in half and tie the ends up and TADA my first hammock. i thought i would try it with a drop cloth first before i invest in some rip stop. Man if i knew it was so easy i would have done this years ago! This is a great site!

I've tossed the idea around for making my own hammock. Your enthusiasm has me ready to take the plunge.
I have 2 great HH hammocks, but just think it would be cool and add to my experience to have made and used one that I made myself!
