DD Travel Hammock suspension conversion idea

    Hi al
I reasently got a DD Travel Hammock and had thought about converting the suspension on it from the DD webbing and biners to a whoopie sling and tree huggers.
I find the webbing and biners really heavy, and think almost doubles the weight of the pack, that and I have found that the webbing drinks up the rain water.
So I was looking for a system that is light, easy to hang and will wick the rain away, the biners do this just now but looking for an all in one system.
Where is the best place to get it from?
I’m kind of new to the hammock seen and forum, so any advice or help would be much appreciated
    Thanks All

Hi Bushark, welcome to the forum.

There is loads of info on here about changing your suspension. It easy to do it yourself, or buy the stuff from Arrow Head Equipment or WhoOpieslings.com all made up.

I use whoopies and tree straps with Loop shackles to replace the carabiners. It saved me around 250g on my Travel and has many other advantages over the creaky stock DD stuff. All of this kit can be made from cord easily sourced in the UK.

    Hi turnerminator
    Thanks for your reply.
I had a quick look at whoopie slings.com, they use hamsteal blue but cant seam to find this stuff in the uk.
I think probably the best thing is for me to buy the full system from them or arrowhead. I would rather get the stuff and make it myself, but its quite hard to get some of the stuff they advertise on there site in the uk. Unless i'm not looking in the right places. Another thing to ask You, have You dutch clips in your system, and do you really need them? Sorry would I really need them.
Found them on a site jacks are better, and on the shug videos he mentions about using them.
    Thanks again for the advice.

I did this on my traveler also. I used AHE, not sure if there is one "best" place tho.

If you want to make your own, you need some Dyneema hollow braid.
Amsteel blue is a little scarce over here, but have no fear, we have just as good if not better on these shores.

You will need some of this in 2mm size(3mm is overkill but good too):

For my whoopies I use 5.5m on each end to make an 8ft whoopie. If you buy a little more, you can make continuous loops, shackles etc too.

I have a DD 2010 Traveler and DD XL Tarp.
What I did with mine so I could use it as a Bivi tent on the ground if required is to stretch the ends out like you were setting it up on the ground and put a figure 8 overhand knot with a bite in the webbing running through the end channels one on each side of the end. Then repeat for the other end. Cut off excess webbing. I then placed a "Dutch" Biner through the loops at each end. Next is a Whoopie sling from "Dutch" Biner to marlin spike knot on tree hugger strap. Tree hugger straps have a new model "Dutch" Clip sewn into the end.

Works great for me and is quick to set up. 2 minutes max! Hook dutch clip, throw in marlin spike hitch, hook whoopie sling to marlin spike hitch, repeat for other end, skin the snake skins back and pull tension to proper hang angle, I'm done. (add insulation as needed)

I ran my whoopie sling straight through the sewn channels on each end of my DD Traveler. Hate the idea of going to ground, but as all I've got is a simple larks head on each end, I'd think I could loosen and straighten out the end channels pretty much instantly.

Hello mate, I'd say the best thing to do would be to start with the stickies - there are a lot of great youtube videos that have been posted by members that really helped me get my head around different suspension ideas.
