Looking for places to hang for planned trip

Wife and I are planning a trip from NC to Ft Smith Arkansas in early March to visit daughter and first grandchild. Will be taking I-20 to Birmingham Al and then I-22 to Tupelo Ms and cut across to Arkansas. The route is not set in stone as if I see side road that looks interesting, I take it to see where it leads. I would like to stop first night and camp out somewhere west of Birmingham. Any suggestions for a campground ect not too far off the beaten path where we can hang for the night would be appreciated.

Just looking for ideas on possible places to hang for the night right now.

My schedule is not set in stone. While I like to try and plan my trips in advance, my plans are always subject to change due to weather, what the wife and or I may find along the way, a part of a state I have never visited/driven thru ect. I also like to plan a possible route and then start looking the areas along the route and see if there might be something interesting to explore.

One place to consider is called Dismal Canyon....It has been a few years since I have been there and it was in a tent, but it might be worth checking out....it should on the route you are taking..

    Congrats on the grandchild!

My first one was born just 2 months ago in Texas. I had the good fortune to time my trip with the Texas group hang. I'll have to speak with my daughter and tell her to time the next on the same
