Pics of my No Sew ripstop poncho top cover

when I'm out with the state guard on field exercises I typically carry a lightweight ripstop poncho.

Since I normally carry it - figured why not find a use for it. I decided to test it on my WBBB to see how it would work as weather protection. It was going to take too many sewing mods to make it a under cover -

so I threw it across the top, clipped it tight at the foot end, then used 2 clips on both sides by the head end. at the head end I rolled the extra material to make it hold better.

you can see in the pic at the top of the head end is a space - works for me to leave some ventilation. I may put a tiny grosgrain loop at the top center so I can put a small string thru that & tie to hammock suspension for additional tie down spot.

My garage is pretty darn cold when only wearing a tshirt & sweatpants. after getting in the hammock for a few mins it was toasty but once I opened the zipper I can feel the cool air rush in.

Ok - I found another clip. and a balloon

Added the clip to the head end center ran a small piece of string thru the clip to the triangles in the suspension.

here's a few more pics to see the head end clip & the underside shows how I rolled the material.

Hopefully I can do a backyard night out & test soon

Nice works Shadow. I'm hanging tonight (in my bedroom) and I'll be trying this out for kicks.

I've done that exact same thing with my huge, family size Neat Sheet ground cover. Works great! Keeps in the warmth and keeps out the rain. Just wish the darn thing weren't bright blue! Sheesh! The other side isn't any better. It's almost like a teal green.

Matter of fact, I used it one time with Randy when we camped at Harmon Creek. We had a nasty storm roll through that night but that Neat Sheet performed very well.

I seriously can't imagine why I waited so long to try a hammock. I drifted off so quickly last night and slept very well. That is, after I removed the poncho top cover. Wow that thing traps some heat in! I'll have to experiment with this more and perhaps order some 1.1 fro Scott at backwoodsdaydreamer.com to make a sock. If the poncho top cover did a great job, I can't wait to see what a hammock sock would do.

Shadow, again, great stuff and thanks for posting.

I did the same thing basically with a Dri-ducks style poncho.
Laid the poncho over the hammock ridgeline, test fit the set up. Added 3/8 wide grosgrain loops and some shockcord (not tight just snug with some extra slack) to secure the poncho under the hammock and uq. Attached two mitten hooks to the shockcord for removal purposes. The shockcord allows for the poncho/overcover to spin and move for exit and entry.
It can work as an over or under cover.

Really like that idea gargoyle. So, I have to ask, any pics of that?

Shadow, I may try a hang in my garage which is uninsulated and see what the poncho top cover does for me.

Syb - glad you had a good nights sleep!
And yes! the poncho cover does trap the heat - especially in the house. I was in my garage with a small vent in the poncho cover & it still got toasty in just a couple of mins
