Cool Hex Fly - simple questions

Hi, I was camping with the delux and the standard fly and it got a little rainy and more than a bit blowy - so much so that the pegs flew out and the fly blew off several times in the night.

Would having the hex fly better protect me from rain and secure better as I assume it's got four points as opposed to just the two?

I've also just ordered an UQ from unsponsored and want to protect that if I can too...

The hex fly will most certainly give you better protection. As far as the stakes... the load will be spread out more but anchoring the stakes is key. The lower the sides are staked out will help reduce the possibility of them pulling out.

Assuming that the two tarps are the same size, yes the hex would distribute the load over twice as many stakes.

But also, try different stakes depending on soil type. MSR Groundhog's generally do well. In very sandy soils Easton's 9" aluminum nails help.

Pile rocks on top of your stake, if available. You can also double stake each guy line.

    Good luck!

All good points but after four days of beautiful summery weather and no hint of rain then at 3/4am everything goes pearshaped and you're crawling around outside in your underwear trying to find and unbend pegs before your sleeping bag gets soaked... don't think there was any localised rocks I could have used and it was a bit late to be double pegging! But lessons learnt...

I think I'll get the hex, double peg (using trees where appropriate!) but I was a little worried the fabric might rip if the wind was too violent... didn't sleep much and was the only time I've actually decamped (and moved into someone elses ground dwelling tent).

The Hex is a huge improvement over the standard Hennessey fly. So much, I ordered a second for "living room" while motorcycle camping. I like good, heavy gauge stakes, hammered in at 45 Deg or so. My last camping trip in November I was assailed by high wonds (30 to 40mph) and heavy rain. The Hex fly withstood it all.

    You might try shock cord.

I have my hammock set up in the back yard and with the stock tie down strings even MSR Groundhogs would pull out when the wind starts whipping. I've replaced the string with shock cord and the problem went away.

Another vote for shock cord, and a Thank-You!

You have added to my vocabulary: "Pear-Shaped" (gotta love it!).

First off, I assume that you are comparing the hex to the standard diamond-shaped fly. With the hex being larger, there should be more square-footage exposed to the wind, but you will have two extra tie-out points. Hard to say what the resulting wind load to anchor point ratio might be . Longer stakes might be in order. MSR GroundHogs are a perennial favorite.

Some favor all-shockcord guylines; some of us like loops of shockcord in line with conventional guyline. That debate should go on forever!

But I do like the hex better than the stock diamond fly for nasty weather.

    Jim
