    Hardware-free suspension?

    Hi!

Everyone here seems to use hardware in their setups. Carabiners, rings, buckles, clamps, and whatnot. Does anyone just use.... Knots?

At the shop yesterday I made two pins out of stainless steel that are about 4" x 1/4" to use with marlinspike hitches. Does anyone have a suggestion for a suspension that would use just these for hardware, or be entirely hardware free? The hammock I use has a loop at each end. I'm thinking webbing around the tree, marlinspike hitch, and hammock loop over the marlinspike hitch.

Strapworks strap, marlinspike hitch, stick, whoopie slings (for adjustability)
KM (tho sometimes I use my purple climbing web tree straps- loop on 1 end only)

Well, for starters, Speer and Claytor hammocks use nothing but webbing, straight out of the box.

If you replaced your loops with whoopie slings (adjustable loops), you'd have the common whoopie sling suspension that many folks use here. Sounds like you're on the right track!

I just use plain jane AHE Tree Huggers and run the permanent amstell from hammock through it with a marlin spike hitch. Works great.

I use whoopie slings and Harbor Freight webbing tree huggers. The only hardware is toggles for marlin spike hitches. I had been using some made of wood, but recently made some out of an anodized aluminum slurpee straw from 7/11 (got 4 out of one straw). Unlike the wood, these show no signs of compression after being loaded.

The weight of rings, buckles and carabiners definitely adds up.

all the research I did b/f ordering whoopies/tree huggers yielded the marlin spike as the no-hardware winner.

The standard setup from Hennessy is hardware free. Just tree huggers and a figure 8 lashing to secure the hammock suspension.

    I consider myself hardware free.

I use nacra-biners/shackles made from dynaglide instead of knots or carabiners.

My suspension goes whoopie sling to shackle to strap.

I use 2 shackles on each side to give me flexibility.

I can connect one to the whoopie sling and then just wrap the strap around the tree and put the other shackle right around the strap. I can also attach both ends of the strap to the whoopie sling and I can still lose one or 2 and get by ok.

I hope that makes sense lol. It makes sense to me.

I use a whoopie sling suspension with marlin spikes (spikes are made from 3/8ths aluminum, but same idea). I'll post some pics when I get home.
