could you use zing it/ lash it for making whoopie slings for your hammock?

hey just wondering, could you make whoopie slings that would be strong enough to hold a man's body weight in a hammock? i am thinking practically here, since zing it or lash it or whatever, one of those 2.2mm dyneema cords; is so much cheaper, and lighter, why not try, even if it is a bugger to splice.

Not with zing it or lash it.

You can make/buy them made from Dynaglide. I pulled a DG sling apart and it failed around 960 pounds. I think Dutch also destroyed some DG and it gave at 940, IIRC.

I use dynaglide weighing in at 210. Have a few naps and 6 nights on them and seem to be holding up fine.

Hmm, good question dandeman.

Opie, you say this won't work? Why not? Is it the weight? Or are they not suitable hollow braid?

This is an old thread that got bumped up...

Zing/Lash It is not strong enough for suspension use. The safety factor for even a lightweight occupant isn't sufficient.

I think the breaking strengths are too low to be safely used for suspension. While it could hold a static weight of a person, there are dynamic forces involved not to mention the exponential increase in force applied to suspension the more horizontal the suspension is set up.

In a static hang where you are sure you have no more than a 30 degree angle on your suspension, it would work fine.

Problem is just getting in and out of your hammock creates a dynamic load and even a 150# person could exceed the ratings of the cord. Start getting less than a 30 degree angle (more parallel to the ground) and the numbers climb exponentially.

Thanks to all for the info. But I just placed my order. lol, I can already feel a "whap, thud" coming! I usually string mine pretty horizontal.

I recall once telling some friends about a breakthrough I had in my hammock design. It broke, and I fell through.

It's still useful stuff. You could make hammock ridge line and/or a tarp ridge line and/or tarp tie outs and/or a bunch of other stuff with a 180 foot spool of it. I plan on ordering some myself very soon.
