OWF 0.9oz Fabric

This is the stuff that allegedly competes with Momentum. I've heard tell it's the same stuff. I don't know.

It is indeed light stuff. My only complaint is that it feels a lot more "plasticky" than regular RS I've used.

I'm using some to make a down TQ and I've noticed that where I pin it, the holes don't "heal". When I've used 1.9oz and 1.7oz, after a while where you pin it, the fabric works it's way back together. Doesn't seem to be the case with this stuff. Now I have this nice piece of shell for a down quilt that has pretty good sized pin-holes along each seam.

Anybody else noticed this issue? Is it really an issue? I've wondered if tumbling it in a cold dryer would make it any better. On the plus side, since I was sewing the baffles, they all have a little overlay of NoSeeUm inside them, so I don't think down leakage will be a problem.

im curious about this fabric as well.
momentum has a dull side and a bright, shiny side.
does this stuff look like that?

but then again, we now have momentum 50 that is promising to be the next step in ul fabric - sounds to me a lot like the 7 denier Montbell is using.

Yep. Bright/shiny is much more pronounced on this than heavier fabrics I've used.

I have used this OWF 20 denier fabric on many occasions, as well as, thru-hiker's momentum. I cannot tell the difference between the two. Both are calendared on one side which gives them that shiny side (that is the "wrong" side).

I'm not saying it comes from the same mill, but it's as identical as I can tell when working with it.

Thru-hiker claims a finished weight, after DWR, of 1.05 oz/sy. I have not weighed this on my scale, but I have weighed the OWF 20 denier fabric at 1.16 oz/sy.

The only reason I said the shiny side is the "wrong" side is that I emailed thru-hiker after I received my first order of this (many moons ago) and that was the answer I got. I really didn't have a clue before then, and I still don't know why there is a right & wrong side. It seems to me the calendared (shiny) side would be more water repellent, if that is what is desired. The dull side probably feels better next-to-skin.

MAD, that was my logic. The shiny looked more water repellent to me too. That's why I put it on the side facing the ground. Great minds and all that.

This not an authoritative answer to the shiny side/wrong side question, but it might be somewhat acceptable. I've heard that BPL's "Momentum" wicks moisture away efficiently, and the same claim is made for some Pertex fabrics (Quantum and Microlight). Pertex microlight has a shiny side and a rough side. They say that moisture is wicked from the shiny side (inside/"wrong" side) by capillary action to the rough ("right") side, where it evaporates quicker because the finer threads have more surface area. This distinction may be more important for things worn close to the body like wind shirts. That's my guess.

As I understand it the "right" and "Wrong" side discussion is really about what shows and what doesn't... The "right" side is the side you're supposed to see in a finished product.

This doesn't change the performance...
