    How narrow can UQ be

I am contemplating a sleeping bag conversion. I can get two UQs that are 60" long, but only 34" wide. Is that too narrow?

Its a tough question. How big are you? It really only has to be the width of your back plus some wrapping around the shoulder area. I would imagine the smaller the quilt, the finickier the suspension to keep it in exactly the right spot.

Yes, too narrow...if you lay diagonally in your hammock, as most do, it will be difficult/impossible to keep a quilt of that size under you. You'll be forced to choose between warm feet or a warm torso.

I'm guessing that you will have some cold shoulder issues with an UQ that narrow. Especially if you use a gathered end hammock and lie diagonally.

    I am 5'11" and 185lbs (should be 160, but . . .)
Your posts confirmed my suspicions that the UQ would be too narrow.

I am going camping in 2 - 3 weeks in coastal SC. I am expecting temperatures in the 30s. This is a cubscout campout so we have set 32 degrees as the bail out / cancel point.

I am pressed for time to prepare for my first hang. If I do not get it together in time, I will be on the ground again.

The second UQ is for my 9 year old son.

The diagonal cut may allow me 2 UQs.

If I have a diagonal UQ, can I still adjust its position by sliding it up and down on drawstrings in side channels or does the taper keep it from sliding easily?

What hammocks are you going to use them on?

We sure would hate to see a kid not get to hang and be the envy of the other cub scouts. I have a kid's setup available for the cost of shipping back to me if you run out of time.

You asked what type of hammock.
Its a homemade 1.9 single layer gathered end with no suspension at the moment. I think I will be adding whoopee slings soon. One hammock is just under 120" the other is about 134". The long one will be cut down at some point. Its huge.

Thank you for your offer re the kids setup. I want him to have something he can grow into.

This is the first den campout for these scouts. Meaning 5 - 9 scouts in the woods as opposed to 100 scouts car camping. Even in ithe cold and even without a hammock they will enjoy it. There will be matches, and knives, and dirt and wildlife.

I think I am going to cut a cheap wally world bag in half, sew gross grain channels in each long side for suspension and see if that works.

Read this, & now I want to go!
My knife is so sharp it cut the sixth finger off my right hand! On the plus side, Inigo Montoya no longer hunts me.
