Hammock Timeline - Request for Entries

I am going to do up an illustration on the timeline of hammocks, but I would like your input. I am going to do a little research myself and see how far back hammocks were used, when they crossed over to different cultures, and finally, the branch we are mostly interested in: hammock camping and the advancements in bug protection, insulation, and more.

If you have an innovation, please name it, the discoveror(s), and the date if at all possible. Some discoveries, innovations, and inventions may be in dispute but I am interested in the story. Who discovered the structural ridgeline? The first bug netting? First tarp usage? Pads and underquilts? Suspension techniques? I don't doubt that many people came to some solutions at the same time, but if you have references, photos, or even thread posts to back up the claim, post it here.

The start of the forum forward could probably be an inset where you zoom in on the scale since more innovations occur at a faster pace in the last several years.

Off the top of my head

    Creation of the major companies
First ridge line hammock to market
    UCR's Whoopies, ect.
    Bridge hammocks
    Bridge skins
    tree boats?
    use of synthetic material.

    excited to see this.

I know one of Grizz's videos on youtube talks about the history of bridge hammocks. Just Jeff's site talks about the origin of HF.

Really? I read a biography on him, and I don't remember anything about that.

Not sure if this helps but my grandfather who is 87 was a merchant seaman in his late teens and 20's. (ended up a marine engineer, head teacher)
When I told him about my camping in a hammock, he just nodded and said "yeh, I liked hammocks too, we used them on the ships to sleep in"
I think he said they would just hang them in there work area in the ship to sleep in.
He had never seen one used for camping though as the ones they used were canvas things.

Don't have time to search for it right now (break's almost over) but we have a thread on hammock patents that discusses a lot of what you're looking for...like a structural ridgeline patent from the 1800s.

There have been several threads on HF where we talked about the origins of different products, like partial UQs and such.
“Republics are created by the virtue, public spirit, and intelligence of the citizens. They fall when the wise are banished from the public councils because they dare to be honest, and the profligate are rewarded because they flatter the people, in order to betray them.” ~Judge Joseph Story

I'll have to do some digging to provide you with some sources, but I've been delving into hammock history for a couple of years now. There is some really neat stuff out there. I read somewhere about Roman soldiers that invaded Egypt reporting back to their superiors that some of the Egyptian soldiers slept in beds that more closely resembled spider webs. I can only assume they were seeing hammocks. I'll see what I can dig up in the next couple of weeks and send it along to you.
