    Un-hotel hanging

I checked in to my hotel in Phoenix yesterday and the first thing I looked around for was a place to hang my hammock. Yes, I brought my hammock for my business trip, doesn't everyone? Well, I'm disappointed to say that I've tried several ways to accomplish a hotel-hang but to no avail. The door from the bathroom to the adjoining door is too close and several arrangements of furniture have resulted in my butt on the ground. I've looked around and there are no structural places anywhere else in the room

I knew I should have brought my portable hammock stand!

I considered a hammock hang on my recent business trip to Las Vegas -- I thought something secluded on the grounds of a hotel on the strip, but then I knew I wouldn't get any sleep.

For my next trip to Vegas, I think I'll just camp at the lake and drive in for meetings. Ahh, that sounds relaxing...

If anyone ever invents a truly backpack-able hammock stand they will make a fortune off the members here

I've thought about camping for my business trips a few times, but always chicken out. Can't really think of a safe way to hang in a hotel room... even if the doors were in the right spot I'd be worried about ripping it off the hinges hanging from it!

Backpackable? Probably not, unless the hiker is willing to accept a considerable weight penalty.

But portable, in the sense that it might reasonably be included in a suitcase or duffle, is definately doable.

It would involve something small, lightweight, and rigid, some machining, standing rigging much like that used on a sailboat, and money.

I plan on trying to find a campground with trees that I can hang from when I take a trip from Maryland to Mississippi in May.

It's like, if I'm not in my bed at home...I should be in my hammock!!

    portable hammock stand

I always thought something could be done with slightly heavier hiking poles? I've been too chicken to try it, fearing that I'd break them.

I'm sure I could build something out of carbon fiber tubing that would be plenty light enough and small enough for travel but it would be very expensive and I would not see the market supporting R&D on it.

For example, 3/4" carbon tubing is a over $10 per foot. 1.5" is $35/foot. If anyone wants to try it, here is a good source.

I'm takin mine on a business trip next month. It'll give me a chance to hone my indoor site selection skills.
