REI Store Clearance/Garage Sales

I don't live near an REI, but a friend wants to visit one so I thought we could time our trip to the approximate dates when REI has their garage or clearance sales. Any ideas of when these typically occur?

I think it depends on each individual store. But I know the guy at my local one says they tend to do theirs twice a year, once at the end of January, and once at the end of the summer. If you're a REI member, they send you email reminders about them.

Actually, just checked, and of you go to the REI site, locate the store nearest you, or at least the one you want to go to, you can look up and search the classes/events calendar for that specific store. Remember though, that the REI garage sales are members only. Would hate to have you drive all the way there only to be turned away for lack of a $20 lifetime member card.

Yep, silentorpheus nailed it. Each store has their own garage sale. I think it was last year, maybe the year before, but the Denver area stores didn't coordinate their sales. I think there were like 7 separate REI Garage Sales that year. Twas a good year.

Call the store you want to visit and get on their email and mailing list, seems like I get a little flyer a couple weeks in advance. Seems like the one up here does it in mid fall.

Ours was Jan 1st this time. I got some Peak UL carbon fiber trekking poles for $20 and the only thing wrong with them was the previous user.

Then plan to get there early and camp out. In Atl, your too late to get anything good if you aren't there several hours before opening.
