I am sitting down to make my first whoopee sling. Can I use a bowline to make the larks head? I am using am steel blue 7/64.

Not sure if it would slip. Ths amsteel is slick, but you can try and post results. . I have not used the bowline for this, but I do like that knot.

yes you could, but since you are splicing a WS, why not just bury the end and make a knot-less loop on the end.
I ride a recumbent.

I assume you are talking about the fixed loop you intend to larks head to the hammock? If you are making a whoopie I assume you have the wire to feed the amsteel into itself to create the bury. If so just make a the fixed loop with a locked brummel.
Amsteel is slippery and although a bowline may hold it can derate the strength of the amsteel and introduce a point of potential failure. Splicing and burying retains most of the amsteel's strength.
Having said that though, Brandon of Warbonnet uses loops of amsteel made with double fisherman's knots with no problems on his hammocks. I have also made similar loops with no issues.

I don't know how to do a locked Brummell etc. I guess I have more reading to do. i am anxious to get started. How much line should I leave to allow for suggested splice? I am going to use bowline for now, but want to leave enuf line for a splice. I need to mark my in and out points.
Here's a good set of instructions for the whoopie to include the eye at the end:

Or, if you've alread completed the whoopie portion, you can use this to create a locked brummel with only one end of the rope available.

Locked Brummel by Opie
Forget the bowline, just do the brummel. You can also find videos of it by Googling:

If you're making the whoopie, go whole hog and do it the first time. Required line for the brummel will be circumference of the loop plus 10" for the bury plus a tiny amount, maybe 1" for the locked brummel part of it. (I *think* 10" is the recommended bury length... it's been a few months since I made one.)

As a lead rope instructor for the Memphis Fire Dept. I would advise against the Bowline. It is a inheritantly loose knot. Meaning it can get slack in it and come loose. We ALWAYS add a saftey if that knot it tied. It also is a less efficent knot due to extreme bites (sharp bends) in the rope. This breaks down the rated strength.
Just my 2 cents

Whoopies completed. For now I have a bowline for the larks head hammock end. I don't think I left enuf line to go back and do the brummell lock. I'll revisit later.
I'm usually patient and spend too long thinking things thru, but I wanted to finish my hammock so I just jumped in.
DIY hammock completed with DIY whoopies. Started on DIY UQ. First hang in 2 weeks.
