    Asym Hex

    hi.
i've been thinking a lot about small tarps.
i have an oes micro black sil coming my way.
madd777 just made one with similar dims.
wbguy lightened up with his asym diamond.

eventually, if i can save $$$, i'd like to have joe at zpacks make me a custom cuben.
    i'm thinking about an asym-hex.
attached is a pic with dims.

    any thoughts?
maybe i missed it?, but i haven't seen an asym hex being offered. perhaps its not a viable design?

If you're putting in 'points' to match your asym position in the hammock, I don't think you need 4 tie-outs. I'm assuming you're trying to shave grams, since you're talking about cuben, so carrying an additional pair of stakes, the extra fabric required, and the additional reinforcement for the tie-outs seem to be counter to what you're shooting for. JMO, but the diamond shaped tarps give enough room under cover for most looking to save weight.

OTOH, you'll probably get a better pitch from your design. I'd go ahead and put in some cat cuts just to help with the pitch and to shave a few more grams off the competed weight.

    Just my out-loud thoughts.
    Trust nobody!

Hey Rip, joe at zpacks has made something similar to this for himself and sent me a picture of it. Its an asym cuben tarp with beaks, and I saw someone on here talking about getting one a few weeks ago too. He sent me a picture I have saved to my email. Ill send it to you. Pretty awesome idea, especially for 3 season or atleast summer conditions. There is 4 tie out points but judging from my use of the hennessy asym, any additional coverage would be worth the little weight penalty.

    Hi Rip,

If you are going to use this over a WB Blackbird, I don't think it will work because it won't cover the shelf. Mine is a minimal sized hex tarp but symmetrical. Unlike other hammocks, the Blackbird has three protuberances; I found that I need the edges at the head of the tarp to go out 45* from the ridgeline to just cover the corners of the two shelves.

You also need good coverage over the footbox, which other hammocks don't have. That leaves one quadrant of the hammock that stick out from the rest. Of course, you could design a tarp in the exact shape of the Blackbird, but I would advise you to enlist the help of an expert in origami!

    all good points.
    thanks to those chiming in.

paul's design's got me thinking more about different configs.

for now, i'm patiently awaiting the micro to see how it performs.

Arrowhead has their Alpine Tarp that's an asym hex tarp. 11' ridgeline, almost 12' long diagonal, cat cut, and weighs in at 11oz.

That's awesome tobit! How's the tarp treating you? Had it out in any adverse conditions yet? How many tie outs does that thing have? Looks like 3 per side.

I'm hoping to have Joe make me a larger 11' x 8.8' this spring but am still very interested in getting some smaller if the cuben works out for me.

Hasn't been out at all yet, just received it about two weeks ago. We are all in deep snow here so it probably will not see any use until spring. Not sure if I will be doing any winter hanging this season or not, probably not. I bought this particular tarp for three season hangs, I'd probably want longer sides for winter hangs up here in the White Mountains.

The tarp has 3 tie-outs per side.

Wow! 3 tie-outs per side! That's intriguing because my hangup (pardon the hammock pun) with diamond tarps is the long, unsupported sides in a big wind. I assume the edges are straight, not cat cut.

I have a place in the White's and love to go backpacking in the winter! I've been pondering the large winter tarp concept as opposed to a minimal tarp with a hammock sock. My theory is that the sock might be more efficient ...
