"S" clips used with tarp suspention

last weekend, at a street fair, i ran across sclips. the price seemed ok so i bought 4 to be used on the camping kit. specificly to clip the tarp onto the trarp suspention line, via prussic loops/knots. now i'm having second thoughts over the size i got....they are about 1" long X about .5" wide-( i belive they are the smallest ones made) my question is "are these able to clip , directly into most tarp gromit holes?" i currently only have a kelly tarp, but trust that i'll be buying up to a deticated tarp in the near future. if forced to use a loop to attach to the tarp gromit, i will, but was looking to elimiate the loops

The small steel ones (marked #1) are what I use for that same application. Never had a probem. Smaller ones are available in plastic, but their strength seems a bit dubious to me. And they are too small to clip onto many plastic D-rings.

There should be a #_ listed on it. The plastic and metal ones are rated similarly for the smaller sizes

I've used #2 metal and plastic with no issue.

I Switched over to JRB microbiners because they only weigh .1 compared to .5 oz for the #2 stainless s biner and .4 oz for the #2 plastic s biner

after reading the replys i had to drag 'em out for a closer look. what i had assumed was all metal s-clips turned out to be plastic (body- gates are metal.) there are no markings. the rating dosen't bother me- that aspect i have looked at and am willing to expermint with! but the throat size and depth are my focus. the measured clip size is- 1.125" long by .5" wide (.125" thick)

Depends on your tarp. You mention grommet holes. I have only experimented with s biners with dedicated hammocking tarps with no grommets.

I have used an Equinox tarp that has grommets for a group shelter tarp and just tied a loop of cordage through the grommet and used it that way. You can do that with the prussik tied directly to the grommet and get rid of the s biner altogether, or if you want the ability to unclip the tarp from the ridgeline, you can tie a loop of cordage through the grommet and clip the cordage to your prussik with the s biner.

also Zpack sells micro biners 6 for $10 ...i just got some and i love them..
i use them for my tarps as well

I love my Kelty 12 and use it on most car camp/outings in summer for shade.
The only thing I would worry about is the strength of the small sbiners. In the wind the kelty is one huge sail. I have had the wind come up and pull 7" tent stakes right out of the dirt.
