    Tarp Guidance Humbly Requested!

I'm need of advice from folks who have actually hung in the woods. Although I'm new to hammocks as of October, I have been sleeping in my DIY hammock with a Stormcrow underquilt for 3 months straight but have done so in my basement (my back has never felt better, but that's worth a whole other post). I have yet to get outside b/c I have no tarp and in Portland OR rain is constant in the winter.

I want to buy a winter season tarp so I can get out in the woods ASAP. That means constant rain, rarely a down pour, and usually not windy. We don't get below 30 degrees very often either. I'm left wondering mostly about size and if pull-outs should be a priority. I've settled on SpinnUL b/c of the constant wet my tarp will be subject to.

Pull outs seem nice to keep things roomy and having a big tarp is appealing b/c once I set up I'll be under it until it's time to start walking again. The rain is incessant. I’m not super concerned about weight as I can only take short trips in the winter and most of those are one-nighters. Money isn't an issue either (I sold my tent.

I've been reading about tarps a ton and watched Shug's videos (the best!) but just can't settle on a tarp. OES MacCat Ultra is winning right now. Is that too much tarp?

All advice welcome. I’m itchin’ to make a purchase! Thanks!

If you don't care that much about weight, PU coated tarps are nearly an order of magnitude cheaper than but about twice as heavy as silnylon tarps of a given size. You can spend some of rest of that tent money on some non-water-absorbing line (I can testify that paracord gets pretty soggy and gross in the PNW) and tri-stakes.

you can always buy a 3 season tarp and then buy 2 grizz beaks from 2qzq. this, in essence gives you a modular 4 season tarp system. imo this is the way to go unless you want 2 seperate tarps

    yay for side pullouts

I would definitely go with side pullouts on whatever tarp you decide to get. I loved the extra space under my OES Deluxe (on the right in image) during rains on my 5 day CO trip this past summer.

Nope, Brian at OES will add them for $4 each. That way they come all sealed and ready to hit the trail. I also have grizz beaks to make it a 4 season shelter. Good stuff.

    Tarps

I am looking for a tarp and am a bit overwhelmed. Any suggestions or comments on the ENO Fastfly. Any information or other tarp suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Dave

rae-rae, that is quite a distance you have between trees in that pic. I can't see the tree on the right, but it looks like you have 12'+ from the hammock to that tree. With that downslope, it looks like the strap would be 10' high! Or is that just an illusion?
