wirerat, yeah if you want to use it thats cool.

One point though, tyvek is absolutely, categorically NOT a vapour barrier and should not be used as such in construction. Its primary use in construction is as the breathable felt layer in roofing. It needs to breathe to prevent condensation on the timbers.

Nick, you are right, Tyvek is not a vapor barrier. It is a water resistant barrier and many have been using tyvek tents and tarps very successfully in both light and heavy rain. And for winter camping where you would be mostly blocking wind and snow, it should be perfectly adequate.

You are correct, I think the breathe ability of the fabric is one of the best things about it. It'll keep the water off your back, yet still breathe. For the budget minded ultralighter it's one of the best options available and still not have to spend your life savings on a great ultralight setup.

I love the fact that I still see people using Tyvek. My 9x9 Tyvek tarp folded nicely into the side pocket of my pack, and worked famously for a really long time. Best thing about it was how easy it was to build, just cut the shape desired, use something you find nearby to fold into the corner, tie it off, and it was as sturdy as you please.

Back when I was trying to go super light, I had a Vaude UL 20 pack, Tyvek tarp, a Wal Mart CCF pad, and my Marmot never winter sleeping bag, still room for food and extra clothing for summer trips.

Using no cook foods, you'd be surprised at my total weight on trail (13lbs), I have since upped my summer weight a solid 4 to 5lbs. The extra comfort items and better food choices make the trail a better experience over all despite the added weight. The extended comfort, improved sleep, and more robust diet gives me more energy to handle the extra weight.

That extra 5lbs includes a more comfy pack, better sleeping system, healthier foods, better cooking system, and some extra tools that are very handy in the woods. it was worth it.

I dont think its accurate to say sil is not waterproof. it depends on weight and the coating. To me 2500 HS is waterproof, and assuming my sil is that, i m happy.
