    Dutch Clip Failure

I posted on my recent Cumberland Island trip report that I had a Dutch Clip failure the first night out. I finally had time tonight to post the picture of it. I think it was one of the original design DC's, as I compared it to another set I have and it's much smaller. I can only think that it must have gotten twisted a bit on the strap as others have reported having happened, although I tried to be careful in the setup.

I hike with engineering types, so it became a great topic of discussion as to why it failed. The general consensus was that it must have had a void somewhere in the material. It didn't turn out to be a big deal, since I brought a backup pair and one of the exact same spares worked fine for three nights. There was some laughter at my expense by the groundlings, but since it was cold and I was hanging low it was more of a surprise than anything else!

I'll probably get a couple more of the 2nd generation DC's from the Jack's and replace all of my old ones at some point. Note: this post was not meant to be a criticism of the manufacturing, as I have several of Dutch's designs and I find them all to be first quality. Things like this just happen and I'm sure it was a twist in the webbing that caused the extra torque on the Clip.

Could it be one of the recalled DC's? I got an email that said if the strap slips the hook would pull off similar to your picture.

I had been shooting some video, Shug-style, right before it happened. That would have been posted if it had happened!

Yes they were the recalled ones because they can turn if you don't stitch them while them hammock is unloaded. I also got over zealous cutting the weight down around the hook. If you PM me your address I will gladly replace them with the newer type that can't rotate and has a stronger hook. Very gald you weren't hurt.

Anyone who has this design is encouraged to send them back to JRB for a replacement set. I'd rather have everyone hanging confidently.
    Peace Dutch

    Thumbs up

Dutch you're da man ... and stand by your product. Makes me proud to know ya.

However my pre-recall's are just fine ... I add the stitch to keep them from falling out of my loop but that's really it. When place on the tree with the return loop coming from behind the tree passing through the clip there's little stress on the clip at all the way I run it and taking the time to snug it in that position has never resulted in a rotating clip to put any force on the retaining hooks.

I have a set of all versions of the clips and biners ... and plan to save them for my future Dutch Hardware Museum, located above the Gorge Rat Livermush and Rhubarb Pie Eatery I plan to retire to!

Which reminds me .... ain't it about time for the Dutchman to invent the next great metal "me gotta have" item?

WARNING: Will discuss Rhurbarb Strawberry Pie and Livermush at random.

I vote to re-create the event, and get some Shug-style video posted!

    Glad you weren't hurt.

Isn't it when the webbing comes out of the hook and sits on top of it that failures may occur? That puts a lot of load on the bend in the hook.

Knotty, that is what I was told. I choose to keep my recalled dutch clips because the email said sewn to strap clips shouldn't have an issue. Key word being SHOULDN'T.

I think there are pre recall clips and post recall clips. The pre recall clips weigh more. The post recall clips have the extra hook in them.
