Skidaway Island State Park is about 10 miles from downtown. There are some short trails there and at the Skidaway Institute for Oceanography at the east end of the island. The UGA Marine Science aquarium at the Institute is closed until the end of Feb so you might consider waiting until then if you want to see that. If you have never been downtown in Savannah, you might want to consider doing a hike in the historic district. Early March the azaleas begin to bloom and usually by St Patrick's Day they are in full color, however the crowd will be in the 100's of thousands that weekend.
Not much else in the way of public camping areas in the immediate area. Any camping after mid-March will usually encounter no-seeum gnats, especially around the salt-water areas

Hunting Island State Park near Hilton Head is pretty cool. They have a heavily wooded primitive camping area, and several hiking trails as well as the beach. Lots of fearless racoons, too.

There are no primitive camping sites here in Savannah unfortunately. Skidaway Island is a great place to visit but the only place to camp in the state park are the area designated RV area's. You could always get out to one of the islands of the coast, I would suggest Little Tybee. Shoot me a message if yall come down to "hang".

Can't walk there. A kayak or canoe would work. We usually have a Scout outing there every few years - primitive style, as in you want to eat, you got to catch it. Sand gnats (biting type) are now out. Bring plenty of Skin-So-Soft. And you will need to carry your water over from Tybee Island. There is a place to launch from the backside of Tybee. Not sure about parking for long term, as in more than a day.
