    1st Annual Florida Hang

Just wrapped up a phenomenal first time event with approximately 50 participants. I think it is safe to say that Ocala National Forest was the epicenter of Dutch Oven cooking this weekend! An unimaginable variety of food was produced from them including breakfasts, dinners and deserts. All results were marvelous thanks to the selfless work of many. It would be impossible to pick a favorite meal, but Terri is definitely the Gumbo Goddess

Quite the array of hanging equipment was on display, both bought and DIY. Many ideas changed hands (or minds). And most importantly, the camaraderie was most enjoyable and lasted late around the campfire, until the last dutch oven was empty

All declared it a raging success and requested a 2nd Annual Florida Hang ... next week!

Many pictures will soon appear in this thread, including a few strange ones

Temperatures got down to the mid 20's Saturday night with frost on the ground Sunday morning - a rare site in sunny Florida.

I had the best time! Of course I bought some gear.

Can't wait to use the new Boatabag! Wondering if I should have gotten two.

Andy - I will be in touch soon. I really do want to kayak the upper Suwannee and I know you will be the perfect guide!

The stove display was impressive and my husband Tim brought home an empty Heineken can to make an alcohol stove. Since we aren't really backpackers weight is not really an issue, but smaller is always better for packing on the yaks.

We had a chance to test our mettle with the temp drop last night. I have to admit, I was not comfortable. I did not freeze, but I still felt it a bit. Good thing I don't have to worry about temps like that all the time!

Thank you everyone for a truly memorable event! Can't wait for the next one.

Ditto everything MAD777 said. I believe this weekend was a colossal success. I'm hoping it spawns several hikes and paddles in the coming months (and of course the 2nd annual FL hang).

The temps turned out "cold for FL" (no snickering Shug!!!). I'm sure folks learned a lot about what to do (and not do) with their pad/UQ/TQ setups. I learned that if the temps are likely to hit freezing don't leave your warm booties at home. http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/i...es/biggrin.gif

The dutch ovens spewed forth some savory and sweet delights this weekend along with the tremendous shrimp/gumbo feast. I can't believe that anyone went away hungry.

I definitely met some great new people and hope to enjoy some outdoor adventures in the future.

Just got home and am still thrilled. Thank you all so much for coming out and making this a wonderful weekend. I think I has the chance to personally thank each of you, and in case I missed anyone, let this thank you serve in its stead.

I knew we could do this and I knew it would be great. But the scale of the turn out, the oblivious enthusiasm for the outdoors, and the wonderful range of expertise was a total delight. Like all of you, I am returning with new ideas and an eye on new gizmos.
We have begun plans for at least two events in the upcoming months. One is a kayak/camping trip. The other is a backwoods hike and overnight. Keep posted for more news, but rest assured the wind now in our sails is a strong one. And, indeed, this was just the first Annual Florida Hang. Many more to come!

Fave memories as I sit here smelling dinner cooking…

Thursday night on the FT hearing voices in the distance as people gathered in camp.

A battalion of tiny stoves smoking and steaming away while Ed was hard at work cooking the real dinner in a massive propane powered boiler.

It taking a full 20 hours before I realized that Tree Rat meant squirrel. And, perhaps worse, finally getting that Damifino was not pronounced “dami-FINO” but really “****-if-EYE-know” and then getting the joke.

Being there for Sunny’s reintroduction to the woods (a million thanks again for being so on top of the wood pile), and how unflappably happy Chattanooga Chuck was all weekend. Really—he is like a force of nature.

Sandykayak’s dogs all piled up together for warmth.

Terri and Tim’s kids laughing themselves silly by the fire.

The contrast between the largest collections of Dutch Ovens this side of Eindhoven and a biblical scale host of titanium cups always on the boil.

Getting asked all night long “aren’t you cold in shorts?” and answering “yes—very” knowing all the while that a snuggy set of capaline undergarments awaited me back in my camp.

Bearfinder regaling dpitalo and Cfisch9 with repeated exclamations of “Holy S--- Extenders!”

Waking up to pee in the midst of a dark night of 24 degrees only to find out that it was really 6:30am and that I had slept peacefully though the worst of it! Whoohoo!

    The Backcountry Boiler. Yay!

So much more too. My humble non-linear, non-narrative videos will be up very soon and I will post a notice here. I wanna see more pics and vids….! How about that snow shoeing!
