Video is finally working. It's just a quick rundown of the hammock and insulation.

I slept pretty well! I spent a lot of time awake, just listening to the forest... trees popping, pond ice shifting. I never heard such a chorus of coyotes, it was really beautiful although somewhat... unnerving

Why thank you very much! It must have been a balmy -20*F inside the sock, eh?

Wow! That's not much... but if you go with not much, those are the right things to use!

I like the idea of using the sock with a blue foam pad... the sock helps keep it in place, and insulates the sides of the hammock above the pad.

Wow! You guys have the record, I do believe!

I think why it works is... although the DD underblanket doesn't have massive loft, it's full-length and just adjusts really nicely once you get the hang of it (har). It's about as big as the IX component of the sock. The pad went between the double-layer of the DD hammock, keeps it in place pretty good.

I'm using the DD underblanket to supplement the bottom of a synthetic sleeping bag, if you tried to use it as part of a UQ/TQ combo it would probably be good to 10 or 15, if you used it with a down SB, probably not a LOT better. I really think the synthetic SB's don't lose as much insulation effectiveness due to compression as down does, and require less under-insulation. That said... my sleeping bag weighs something like 9 lbs, I bet a TQ/UQ combo weighing 9 lbs would have some LOFT!

I used the same SB, DD Underblanket, and polarfleece liner, without the pad and with much less worn inside, down to -13F with no problems on a previous trip. Honestly I was overdressed inside my setup this time, but I believed I might be facing -40 with 15 mph winds, I erred on the side of caution (note that I didn't zip all the way in to my SB which is usually a MUST for me).

WOW, nice report. I'm kind of jealous though, you make my new record of -2 seem like "swimmin weather". Thanks for taking us along with you.
