Last Minute Brutal Cold ADK hang!

So a buddy of mine, Jamie "NFA" from the ADK mentioned that brutal cold was forecasted for this weekend. He, another buddy Bryce "Bster13" and I decided to do a last-minute road trip/campout, which I referenced in This Thread.

Bryce and I arrived at about 2pm on Sunday. It was already below zero when we arrived, and although it was nice and sunny the temp was falling fast. First order of business was to shovel out a couple parking spots and some paths. I actually shoveled all the way to the outhouses although I don't think anyone used them... well I left a roll of TP in a plastic bag for the next campers

Next we got busy getting camp set up. NFA arrived while we were in the middle of this, so I got him to do some videography to help me share my hammock setup for the night.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fc8T_19d21w

Here's the completed setup including tarp. I did build a bit of a snow wall to help block wind from the expected direction. I pitched the tarp lower and flatter than I usually would, and the hammock a bit lower than usual as well.

Bryce used a crazy poncho shelter.

NFA decided to use his trusty tent, as much to give us a backup in case the hammock or poncho was not working out as anything.

It was a fun trip. We decided not to bother with a campfire, instead just going for a walk whenever we got a bit chilly. Got to listen to the pond ice and trees snapping and popping in the cold, also got an unexpected serenade from a pack of coyotes around 3:15am.

NOAA claims we saw -36F. Our thermometer read -30 <shrugs>

One special shout-out to MacEntyre, I think the IX-insulated hammock sock really helped make this comfortable and do-able! Also a shout-out to Bryce (Bster13) and Jamie (NFA) for being a good combination of brave and stupid enough to join me!

Sounds like a great trip! Bet you missed having that fire though. Were you comfortable enough? How did you sleep? Maybe it's in the video, which I have yet to watch. Still... great report!

Yep, I think it is a new record low for my "record low" thread. Depending on if you want to go by near by official weather readings, or if you want to go by the on site thermometer. The weather station is probably more accurate equipment. Then again, it is no big thing for temps to vary by 6 degrees in another spot a few miles away.

If you go by on site thermometer, then we now have a tie for Fourdogs temps from 4 years ago: minus 30. Either way, Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Ironic that my recent thread about "what is the record low" might have a new record set before a few hours had passed!

I suspect we will see even colder records hanging before this year is over.

I slept pretty well! I spent a lot of time awake, just listening to the forest... trees popping, pond ice shifting. I never heard such a chorus of coyotes, it was really beautiful although somewhat... unnerving I brought my Ipod but I found just listening to the woods was plenty of entertainment, for me. There were times I could feel my feet just slightly cold (probably should have down booties, darn it), not enough to be bothersome, but detectable. Let's face it, when it's 20 or 30 below zero you're breathing some cold air and you're going to feel it, but the MollyMac sock helped create a bit of a "micro-climate" that helped deal with this. Overall I'm pleased with the current "A-game" sleep system, although I guess if I had to pulk it around behind a pair of snowshoes I wouldn't be so thrilled

    Regarding the sleep system:

Molly Mac single layer IX hammock sock
    DD Underblanket
    DD Traveler hammock
Blue foam pad from Mega-Lomart in DD double-layer
Browning Kenai -30 rated mummy bag (I never thought I would need this rating, let alone exceed it!)
    Cabelas Polarfleece sleeping bag.
I had a couple pair of wool socks on, a layer of polypro, 200wt polarfleece pants, and an EMS Glacier 650 fill down jacket. Wool gloves, micro-fiber hood.

The insulation and sock allowed me to get through the night without zipping all the way into the mummy bag, I had it zipped most of the way but didn't have the mummy bag hood on or feel that I needed it.

Did you wear the fleece pants, down jacket and wool gloves in the -30deg F bag? Or was that clothing for around camp?

Was the Cabelas Polarfleece sleeping bag nested inside the Browning Kenai -30 rated mummy bag ?

    Thx

I did wear them inside the bag (as well as around camp, with a shell layer) and the polarfleece bag was nested inside as well.

Thing is, I've used this bag several times, both on the ground and in hammocks (down to -13F in a hammock previously and I think -15 or so on the ground?). It's a "Browning by Slumberjack" and I think the temp rating is pretty wildly optimistic. I think it's a real good 0, or -10 bag... it's also a size long, and oversize besides, it's gigantic... Shaq would fit in this bag no problem.
