I think the idea for this is more of a backcountry hike than a gathering (let's put that Vargo of yours through its paces Damifino!). For that reason I don't think facilities are not really an issue. However, if there is a place where base campers can hang out while back packers hit the bush, I am all for it. All the more so if they can feed us when we get back! I agree with Zuki that Richloam is not the most, shall we say, scenic of trails.... But, it has the advantage of having large loops. I need to look over Hog Island and see what makes sense. We need to find either something with a large (12-20 mile) loop, or a linear path with some way back to the initial trail head afterwards.
Hedgehogs! Why can't they just share the hedge?

I definitely think we should do April instead of March. April looks much better for me.

And I agree about putting that Vargo through its paces.

The first two weekends in April work fine for me. Gets bad after that. Any other date ideas?

I agree with Islander to have this be a backpacking trip and plan a separate trip (I'm on it) for kayaking/canoeing. If you guys decide on April, I'll look at March for a paddling trip.

I'm looking hard at Canaveral National Seashore. The only issue is there reservation policy. It's not impossible, but it's going to take some deliberate planning to get the site I want the weekend I want it.

Those interested should understand this is not going to be car camping, but back country camping from your boat. You will have to carry in everything, even your drinking water.

Hope that helps with your planning of this trip! I'm sure you guys will have a great time. I'm not ready (or equipped) to backpack yet.

I'm still toying with setting up a Meetup group manage future outings. I like the functionality of managing things like attendee limits and costs, but not happy about paying $150.00 per year to have it.

I agree Terri. This forum is fine for planning hammock hang outings, even if its via kayaks. I'll not be going to Ground unless I'm being punished.
I'm geared and ready for any kayak-hammock camping trips!

Yeah--we want to stay on HF for so many reasons--not the least of which is that there always be new people jumping on board. Now, about the hike-I bet there is enough spare gear between us all to outfit you and or Tim if you wanted to hit the woods with us.

I have to agree with what has been said. I don't think we need to replicate the car camping group hang of Ocala every time we get together. That is a hard expectation to reach. By focusing on a hiking/backpacking or a paddling weekend, we could have more frequent get togethers and have more flexibility when it comes to campsites.

If we are tentatively looking at the second weekend of April, let say, we could have a recon trip to Hog Island, Silver Lake, or where ever in late February to see the areas first hand.

The real trick is to find a suitable hiking area that is treed for hanging, maybe some water for drinking, and a pleasant walk.

I don not know the area too well, but Potts Preserve has a 16 mile loop trail and primitive campsites. Here is some information from the SWFWMD site.
