Well, got my stand put together and had a nice test hang in the Hennessy last night....I ended up not bothering with cutting the fence post just so I could have a solid proof of concept. Even using 7' poles for the tripods instead of the recommended 5', I only ended up about 4" off the ground...but I was off the ground! Thanks for the design, turtlelady, and the help and experiments by everyone else!

    Stand mods

I'm writing this as I lay in my WBBB in the back yard. I have the hammock hanging from my turtlelady stand and my superfly rigged to keep the rain off.
I did some modifications to the tripod rig. First was to chop down the legs to 5' 6". Second, I drilled holes in the ridge pole ends. These holes are for hanging S-hooks for attaching my hammock suspension. I ran my whoopie slings through the S-hooks and joined them in the middle of the ridge pole with a carabiner.

    Tarping the stand

So. How do I use this stand to give weather protecton? Well, throw a tarp over it, of course?
Problem 1. Chaffing of the tarp from the tripod poles.
Problem 2. Where to tie the tarp

My girlfried solved the first problem. She suggested a pair of knee pads. Perfect! I used the elastic and velcro straps to attach the pads to my tripods.

The second problem took a couple attempts. At first I tried tying the tarp ends to a tripod leg. No good. As I tensioned the tarp ridge it pulled the opposite tripod top inward, lifting the far leg and causing a risk of collapse. Axe tht idea.
The second try seems to have worked. I ran my tarp CRL over the knee pads and to a stake at each end. The stakes are about a foot from the outboard tripod legs. I tightened the CRL with a knot bone. The result is the net force on the tripods is downward. The legs no longer wantto move about. The corners were easy... Tent stakes and my home made self tensioning guy lines just like normal. The doors of the superfly will close around the tripods creating a tent like structure.

Interesting setup, shumway (or do you go by gordon?) going by your pictures, it looks like you may also be hanging from two 10' fence post top rails like me. About how far apart do you have your tripods? Do the s-hooks change the compressive force to make bowing of the ridgepole any better or worse?

Yep, it's a 10 foot fence top rail, sawed in half and reassambledwith the swaged end inserted into the oher piece. On the second question... Looks up, reachs up to feel it... I don't notice any change to the rail like this. I appears straight so far.

Now I need to climb out of this nest and find a pad to put under me. The breeze is a little cool on my back
