I've been thinking in the same vein. Heading to Virginia next week to pick up G-daughter for the summer and my turtledog won't fit in the trunk. Guess I'll just have to hang down beside the creek. Someone had questioned about hingeing the toprail which could work for the legs. One of my thoughts was making sleeves out of aluminum tubing. Square in my case for the 2x2 wood legs on mine. Maybe 10" to 12" pieces would allow enough bury inside the sleeve.

I am new to hammocks, and never thought of hanging inside. Looks like Turtlelady's stand is very fine ; but there are still problems with materials This site I found may help:

They make telescoping tubing for radio antennas, both in aluminum and fiberglass. I bought some aluminum for my experiments with a single pole and the service was very quick and I spent very little compared to shopping in lumber shops around here. Ordered last Monday and got my tubing last Thursday! YMMV.
    Hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing this resource. Which diameter tubing did you order?

Since I want to make only 2 poles I only got these, and I intend to probably cut them shorter as I experiment. The walls are just shy of 1/16" BUT they do have thick wall that also telescope ')
Perhaps I could have gone smaller O.D. but I went with the largest I could reasonably afford , and they are not very heavy. The three telescope together very closely, I plan to drill holes to be able to use a pin to vary the length. They seem plenty strong, and I bet you could use them for a ridge pole that collapses.
I did not, but I bet you could contact them and get some advice from them on what you are using them for.

    2 at $7.65 each. DXE-AT1505 ............................ $15.30
    Aluminum Tubing 3' x 1.875" x 0.058" wall, 6063-T832 drawn, no slits

    2 at $6.85 each. DXE-AT1504 ............................ $13.70
    Aluminum Tubing 3' x 1.750" x 0.058" wall, 6063-T832 drawn, no slits

    2 at $6.05 each. DXE-AT1503 ............................ $12.10
    Aluminum Tubing 3' x 1.625" x 0.058" wall, 6063-T832 drawn, no slits

Not an engineer, and have been known to way over build. so I probably could have done with smaller tubing.

Please let me know how you do with this.

    Best,
    Peter

how high is your hamnmock from floor?

Forgot to ask; How high does your hammock hang from the floor when you get it set up? I would like to rest at about 18"

    Physics ???

I am totally into this thread and have been inspired to make a go at making a bamboo turtlelady stand. I found some free bamboo on craigslist and thinking of using bamboo as the ridgeline and bundling a few as tuliku did. The ones I am planning on using are 1.5-2 inch in diameter and have a slight bow. the physics ? is can I use the recurve in the bamboo to counter some of my 220lbs if I have the bow downwards and hang the hammock slightly outside of the tripods along the ridgeline. I am trying to use as few bamboo pole for the ridgeline as possible and I think the curve may help. Any Thoughs? Thanks

While the compression on the ridgepole will attempt to bow it further, attaching the hammock outside of the tripod attachments will indeed counteract this to some degree. The trick is not to go out so far that you exceed the strength of the ridgepole.

You may also find that the bamboo has sufficient strength on it's own to overcome the bowing.

The 2" diameter ridge line may be all you need.

Test very gingerly as you move your suspension outside the hanging point of the pole! I speak from experience.

Looking forward to hearing or seeing of your tests and results.

BTW: Yesterday a houseguest saw my hammock stand and told of bamboo poles he once saw supporting a festival canopy. They had been made by a woodcrafter who had threaded the bamboo sections. This has me intrigued. My friend is going to see if he can locate this woodcrafter again. Eight years ago he had a shop near Chesterton, Indiana and was named Mark. Anyone live near there?
